George's Story
Life
After high school, attended the University of Richmond and received a B.S. in Math with a minor in Physics in 1964. Member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. Worked at campus radio station WCRC. Continued playing drums with The Leaguers until the fall of 1963. Got a job with radio station WEET as the DJ who worked all the shifts nobody else wanted (early morning, late evening, weekends).
After U of R, taught high school math at Patrick Henry HS in Ashland for 1 year, then spent 2 years doing graduate work in mathematics at George Washington University in D.C. Got a job at the Federal Highway Administration as a technical reader for a blind highway engineer, which eventually became a permanent position as a mathematician.
Left the Government in 1981 to take a job with a Government contractor. Eventually was assigned to a contract with the Federal Highway Administration as a project manager and a senior analyst.
In 1986, began to work as an independent desktop publishing specialist, doing graphics for proposals, brochures, etc. In 1988, began developing custom business management software for an interior design firm. This became my professional focus by the early 1990's, and I continued to develop custom software for researchers at NIH and several small businesses.
Married Abigail Donald (TJ '61) in 1967. Two children, David (Dec 1967), and Anne (October 1970). Divorced in 1975. David is a traveling musician (Taarka, ThaMuseMeant) who lives in Lyons, CO, with his wife, Enion and son, Aesop (born 2008). Anne and her daughter Justine (born 1990) live in Seattle, where Anne is a graphic designer and business development consultant.
Married Judy in 1989 (she had a daughter and two so...Expand for more
ns by her deceased husband). I have a home office where I work most of the time.
July 2009: Lost my part-time job for a Government contractor in January, and my one steady client has sharply reduced my hours, so I'm currently both job-hunting and looking for new clients.
June 2010: Still looking for work, and Judy's daughter and her family (2 adults, 2 teenagers, 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a partridge in a pear tree) have had to move in with us due to the loss of construction work for her husband. It sounds like a difficult situation, but it's not. They're very easy to live with.
December 2011: Judy and I moved from our house to an apartment in Frederick, MD, and we are renting our house to Judy's daughter and her family. My office is in what would be the living area of the apartment.
I'm currently an independent custom software developer, but most of my billing comes from a small number of current clients.
September 2013: Have lost all of my remaining software development work due to losing my ability to understand increasingly complex software logic. Looking for any type of work I can still do.
February 2015: Fully retired, but would probably accept work if it's something I can still do. I like to sleep late and watch Law and Order reruns at night. Continuing my longstanding habit of working out, now at Gold's Gym in Frederick, nearly every Mon-Wed-Fri nights from 7-10pm. Many reasons for this: I'm used to it (started in 1964), it makes me able to do most of what I used to do in daily life, I can't really afford to keep buying new clothes, so I need to fit in the ones I've had for years, and osteoarthritis makes everything harder, so I need to preserve as much of my strength as I can.
