George's Story

My wife, Susan and I both work at Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights. My wife, Susan is the head of Packer's Upper School. I teach math in the Middle school. I am also the 8th grade head teacher. This primarily means that karmic forces have sentenced me to attend middle school dances for the rest of my life....Basically I have to repeat middle school until I get it right. A sort of educational Ground Hog's Day... I get a little older every year...My students stay the same age and seem to deal with the same problems every year. We were there on 9-11. Our school day was very chaotic. Many of our kid's parents work on Wall Street. Kids would go from total denial to panic and back all day long. As I was watching the kids in the garden paper ash from the towers rained down and jet fighters roared in the sky prepared to shoot down any other airliners approaching the city. Thank God, it never came to that. In the end, none of our students lost any of their parents. We lived in Park Slope then. Our fire alarm went off that day because of the smoke from the towers (6 or 7 miles away!). We did loose neighbors and some of my former students attending Stuyvesant High School a few blocks from the world Trade Center saw things that no one should ever have to see. For weeks following the attacks, the city was quiet. It seemed like everyone went out of their way to help any stranger. New Yorkers have a bad reputation about things like this. It is totally undeserved and in times of need they can step up and perform remarkable acts of kindness. I always dreamed to seeking a simpler life in a small town. I was pleasantly surprised to find life in New York to have a real small town feel. The city really is just a bunch of small towns connected by train. I go literally weeks without getting in a car. My walk to work takes only about 5 minutes. Any type of food you could desire is only a phone call away. We currently live in a doorman building in a new residential area in downtown Brooklyn. Our building used to be the phone company. A doorman building is basically an assisted living facility. We expect to live here until they haul us out in a box. Susan and I have two kids. My daughter, Eva is will be 26 just before our Reunion in June. She finished her Master's degree and is looking for teaching jobs. Right now it looks like she will end up in Grand Prairie of all places. I knew that Eva would be a teacher after watching her deal with students at Packer's summer camp when she was in the 8th grade. She was born to do this. When you teach history and don't carry a whistle, it is sometimes hard to find a job. She's pretty sure she has one, but has to take a test before she can sign a contract. Zeke is a senior at Dartmouth. He is a classics major and is one of the executive editors of the school paper. He studied last year in Italy. I put one of the shots he sent us while he was there. I'm pretty tall, but he...Expand for more
towers over me. Unfortunately he has his mother's ups. Zeke graduates the weekend after our Reunion. He has a paid internship at a new media consulting firm started by this guy from MSNBC. Basically the internship is a three month audition with a chance at a job in the fall. My wife and I are really enjoying the empty nest. With Susan running the upper school and me teaching math in the middle school having a peaceful home free of adolescent drama is just wonderful. We are down to one ancient cat and a crazy dog we adopted from a rescue organization. Health is good. I walk a little over 100 miles on the AT each summer. Last summer I walked up on a Panther in the Shanandoah National Forest. Coolest thing I've seen in the woods with the possible exception of mating eagles! I'm planning on going back to Virginia this summer to walk south from Waynesboro to Roanoke. This is the only stretch on the AT in Virginia I haven't done. I dream of one day walking the Appalachian Trail from start to finish. I may one day figure out how to do it, but six months on the trail is a long time to be away from Susan. I weigh more than I aught, but I'm working on it. To quote Dan Quail, "A waist is a terrible thing to mind!" While Dan thought he was quoting the motto of the United Negro College Fund, this quote perfectly describes my feelings toward dieting. I'm a bit bummed that I have more hair on my back than on my forehead. I ache and it feels like my ankles are full of gravel. The warranty on my old body is out. I would go back to 27 in a heartbeat, but I would want to hold on to every thing I've learned. I wouldn't go back to 18 for a million bucks. I started to play guitar again last summer. I was actually pretty good at one point, but got to busy to practice. My jammin' buddies all live thousands of miles away too. Went to see Jackson Browne earlier in the year and drew some inspiration from that. Susan was a bit ashamed as our generation doesn't seem to be aging well. It's not fair that he looks like he did in 1971. Based on what I saw at this concert, I am expecting a bunch of Old Farts to show up at the Reunion. I'm looking forward to seeing folks at the reunion. Haven't seen any of you guys in ages. First work and now geography has separated me from you all. I feel like I read the first few chapters of a fairly good book and misplaced it. Hope to find out how it came out at the Reunion. Ran into Coke and Bonita at the movies one Christmas about 10 years ago. Used to play poker with Stephen Seabold not to mention plot the non-violent overthrow of the government. Leanora Stevens and I both converted to Judaism and went to the same Temple before we moved north. I have been able to find a few old classmates through the internet. Exchanged a few emails with Reed Merritt who went to Longfellow and Rusk with a bunch of us. Did the same with Charles Banks and Janie Guthrie earlier in the year. See you in Dallas!
