George's Story
Ok, ok...
First let me explain how I came to graduate from Hallsboro High School:
Was never a bad kid but did run with some wild ones... In the spring of 1957, a couple of guys were posting items on the school bulletin board about some of our teachers that were, uh..uh not very nice. During lunch period one day, such a posting when up while I was on look-out at one side... Mrs. Putman, who was the said target of the post, caught us and claimed I did the posting... Off to Mr. Lathan Office, where I stated again that I DID NOT post the pictures. He said "You're expelled George", I said: "Like hell I quit".....
That night I went to see the Principle of Hallsboro, my Uncle Robert Elkins, and told him the whole story and asked if I might transfer to Hallsboro... Next d...Expand for more
ay, the answer was yes and that Mr. G. Smith would be willing to pick me up each day... SO I became a 'Bogue' and graduated in 1958....
By the way, if you are wondering who posted the pictures his name is Norgie Hester. Mr. Everything at CHS:-)
General: I was born in a shack in Emerson, NC, Dad went to Virginia the following week to work in the ship yard and two weeks later the family moved and stayed in Va until WWII ended.
We returned to NC to farm for my Grand Dad who was in his 70's.. We had plenty to eat but almost nothing else except a tractor, a truck, a wood stove, a hand water pump on the back porch and a "two seater out-house".. In addition, hail wiped out 32+ acres of tobacco, plus corn and all other crops in 1956. No college and no car:-()
