gerald's Story
I attended Kelly High and Tuley High schools. I transferred to Tuley in 1959 and quit in my senior year(1961) and joined the US NAVY. I was stationed in Norfolk VA , naval operations base as a MACHINE ACCOUNTANT(data processing), an old term for computers.I got an early honorable discharge in march 1964 and cam back to Chicago where I was born and raised. I got a job a Spiegels on 35th and Aberdeen, worked there for 11 years and got a lot of on the job training. I was RIFT'ed(reduction in force) in 1964. Several months later I secured a position at United Insurance for 2 1/2 years, got a job at the CTA(systems programmer) installing software and doing maintenance, left there in Nov 1982 and went back to United Insurance and worked there for 16 years. I left United Insurance in 1998(at 55 en old) and secured a position at 1st Chicago NBD, later merged with Banc One, and later merged with JP MORGAN CHASE. I retired in 2005 and moved to Leitchfield Kentucky. 3 months into retirement I was injured in a construction accident. ve and it tipped over. I hit the ground really hard and because I was holding onto the railing the jolt tore a hole in my aorta(3 1/2 inches), I was supposed to have died right there but for some reason the mesh around the aorta slowed down the bleeding and they were able to airlift me to Louisville. At that time those were my only injuries(not a broken bone). Long story short, when they operated on me to fix the aorta they had me under for over an hour(complications) and it starve my spinal cord from oxygen and blood for too long a time and it killed several nerves in the spinal cord, the result being it paralyzed me from the waist down(paraplegic). I am confined to a wheelchair(electric now) and I haven't given up hope. I am scheduled to go to HINES Illinois for .treatmen on 2/5/13. I don't remember faces and names but I figure maybe, someone might remember me . I apologize for not being able to remember people but we were young and things move fast and furious when your young. Looking forward to hear from anyone that was there (1959-1961). Thanks a million for putting up with me. JD
