Gerald's Story
Gerald Leroy Hann (born May 17, 1952) is an analytical chemist. His early research on enantioselective fluorodehydroxylating agents gave him a great basis to expand into the world of analytical chemistry. He has authored numerous scientific articles, presentations and internal company analytical methods.
Gerald received his bachelor's degree in chemistry at Youngstown State University in 1974, while working on water soluble alkylating agents. He received his doctorate in organic chemistry in 1991 from the Kent State University, where he wrote a dissertation entitled: The Development of Homochiral Aminofluorosulfuranes as Potential Enantioselective Fluorodehydroxylating Agents. The most successful target of this research was (S)-2-methoxymethyl)pyrrolidinosulfur trifluoride. His interest in natural products spurred his candidacy proposal entitled: Synthesis of Diterpenoids by Intramolecular Diels-Alder Reactions. Here the molecule of interest is caudicifolin, originally isolated from extracts of rhizomes of Euphorbia acaulis.

was born in the Youngstown, Ohio and lived in the suburb of Austintown until graduation from Youngstown State University. As a resident of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio for many years, he worked for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. In 1992 shortly after graduation from Kent State University, he and his family moved to Stow, Ohio, while he continued his studies at Kent State University. With Monsanto calling, he and his family moved to the Saint Louis suburb of Wildwood, Missouri in 1994. He worked several years in Monstanto's Analyical Science Center (ASC), until the company spun off the chemical division as Solutia. As the Solutia projects decreased more analytical work was found at Chemir Analytical Services of Maryland Heights, Missouri. A great opportunity for working for Mylan Technology in Saint Albans, Vermont was presented to the family and they moved to Fairfield, Vermont in September 2002. The family moved back to the mid-west to the Chicago, Illinois suburb of Buffalo Grove for more analytical work for Stepan of Northfield, Illinois.
