Gerald's Story
Hello Classmates,
I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Cinema and Photography from Southern Illinois University in August of 1987. I have been working in the field for 29 years as a professional free-lance photographer specializing in nature, landscape, sports, travel, events, yearbook, magazine, portraits and special projects. I have worked for numerous magazines, annual reports, graphic designers, newspapers, high schools yearbooks & sports programs, and various community organizations. My work has been published in Wonderful West Virginia Magazine, Nature Conservacy, Western Pennsylvania Conservacy, Columbus Monthly Magazine, Beaver County Medical Center Connection Magazine, Northern Connection Magazine, and various publications for Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation, Northern Allegheny County Chamber of Commerce and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds (pro soccer team).
I was also a Photographer's Assistant for Clyde Hare Photographer (my father) since high school graduation. Since his death in October of 2009, I have been working on digitizing and preserving my father's legacy, sixty years of photographs specializing in corporate, magazine, industrial, aerial, annual reports, portraits and special projects. He was an internationally-known photographer and his client list included National Geographic, Fortune, Life, Times, Business Week, Sports Illustrated and the NY Times.
My work has appeared in many exhibits, including the International Museum of Photography/George Eastman House at Rochester, NY, West Virginia Conservacy Nature Education Center, Beechwood Farm Nature Reserve (Audubon), the Legislative Art Show at the Capitol in Harrisburg, Three Rivers Art Festival and the North Hills Art Center, two Father-Son photography shows at the Silver Eye Center for Photography as well as a show as one of 16 invited artists in September 2008 celebrating 250 years of plant life in Pittsburgh with connection of 250th anniversary of Pittsburgh. For the last several years, I served as a judge for several photography contests in our neighboring states and as volunteer for my church. I just completed two terms (six years) as a member and chairman on Board of Deacons and currently a member at large on Building & Grounds Committee at my church.
I have been coaching for twenty-six years with specialty in goalkeeping. My coaching stops have included Hampton High School Boys’ Varsity Soccer (goalkeeper coach), Hampton Soccer Club (Head Coach for U-14 Girls), North Catholic High School Girls’ Varsity Soccer (Head Coach) and Woodland Hills High School Boys’ Soccer (Assistant Varsity Soccer and Head JV Coach). For the past nineteen years, I have been a Varsity Assistant Soccer Coach / Goalkeeper Coach at Shady Side Academy for the boys’ and girls’ varsity soccer teams, as well as Assistant Coach for 7th & 8th Grade Boys’ Soccer team. I hold NSCAA National Goalkeeper Diploma, NSCAA Advanced Regional Diploma and NSCAA High School Coaches Diploma. I am a certified CPR Trainer and Sport Safety Trainer (American Red Cross).
I founded the Hare Goalkeeper Academy specializing in year-round goalkeeping training and education for youth goalkeepers from age 7 to college level. Many of the services include private training, clinics, summer / satellite camps, evaluation and video service for recruiting purposes and match analysis.
On a personal note, I am still single and not complaining. Perhaps, someday I will meet a special lady to spend my life with. When not working, I spend my spare time playing golf, bowling, canoeing, backpacking, fishing, home improvement projects, art & photo shows, classical & jazz music, and quality time with family, relatives and friends.
Lastly, I would like to share my best experience in school at Hampton. In school, I learned and appreciated the sense of belonging, being accepted and respected by peers and teachers. Being in control of my learning,, with opportunities to make decisions and work toward personal goals. Sense of belonging helped me to have more positive attitudes toward school, teachers and peers, participate more in school activities, and interact with peers, adults in personal (charitable) ways.
That is all for now. To my fellow classmates, keep in touch and see you at the next reunion perhaps in 2018.
