Gerry's Story

Life after I left Hillcrest, I worked at the Rideau Regional Centre (now closed) in Smiths Falls (started Oct 2, 1972.) I began my training in the MRC program (working with individuals who were developmentally challenged) now DSW program in November 73. I moved to Picton in 1974, and worked at the Prince Edward Heights Complex (now closed.) I stayed there for a year as a Residential Counsellor II. I then found employment at Oaklands Regional Centre in Oakville, Ont. I was fortunate and was promoted to a supervisory position and work with some pretty terrific kids and staff. I went back to college and got my CYW diploma from George Brown College in Toronto. In September of 1979 I got a job at Sault College teaching in the MRC/DSW program. In August of 1981, I married a wonderful woman and had two great kids. In 1989, I began teaching in the Social Sciences department at Sault College teaching mostly psychology courses. I finished my BSc in Human Services from Lake Superior State University and then went on to get my M.A. in adult education from Central Michigan University. I've also taught part-time at Algoma Univesity College (a satellite campus of Laurentian University.) I was on a leave of absence from Sault College (from Sept 2003 to June 2004) working at Lambton College in Sarnia, developing new programs and developing research policies for NSERC eligibility. I was later hired full time at Lambton College where I coordinated the CICE...Expand for more
program and continued on with program and research development. On December 31, 2008 I officially retired and and am loving it. I'm looking forward to learning how to play the piano, write and record some songs, contnuing to the gym on a more regular basis, biking, SCUBA, and enjoy being with my family and friends. I must admit, I really miss my friends in Sault Ste Marie and it has been difficult leaving (especially the rock and roll band members I played with, i.e., The Reptiles.) I'm still in the process of starting a new band here in Sarnia. In 2015, I required double bypass surgery and came out of it with flying colours. Things were going pretty well until January/February 2018 when I was diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma called Mantle Cell Lymphoma. It was a year of pure hell with chemo treatments and radiation. Of course I lost all my hair a couple of times and I looked like Lex Luthor. On a positive note I have been in remission since July 10th, 2018. I'm hopeful to get many more years before the beast returns. I'm doing okay for the most part and still enjoying retirement. I would love to hear from my old friends from Ottawa, Smiths Falls, and Picton, Oakville, Sault Ste Marie, and elsewhere. I enjoy playing guitar, writing songs, working out, and I love retirement.. My favourite artists are The Beatles, Eric Clapton, B.B. King, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Jonny Lang and The Who (among many other bands). That's all for now.
