Glenn Jay's Story

Dear family and friends, I¿ve written a quick overview of my life since Alhambra, and I hope you¿ll enjoy it. During college at Biola University in La Mirada, Ca and at Arizona Bible College and College del Rey in Phx. I worked as a photographer in East L.A. and then for my Dad's company (Candid Wedding Photographers on West Camelback Road). After college and through the Spring of 1977, I worked full-time for my father. After being contacted by a headhunter I moved my family to Northern California and worked for Keith Cole Photography in Redwood City. A year and a half later, that company was sold and I decided it was time to open my own. So, in June of 1978 I became self-employed and remain so to this day. Glenn Jay Photography started in the garage of my home in San Mateo. In 1981 I moved the business into the Laurelwood Shopping Center. For over 21 years in the same location (through May, 2002) we grew and were recognized by many in the San Francisco Bay Area as being a leader in our photographic community. In the early 90's I changed the name of the company to Choice Photographic to reflect the fact that the company had grown and now had many really good photographers whose work was being represented out of my studio. In June, 2008 I celebrated my 30th year in business. I am proud to say that over the years, myself, my staff, and the photographers that put their lot in with me have served literally hundreds of corporate clientele including Nordstrom, Visa, Apple and Oracle, plus thousands more clients who trusted us with their family portraits, or their wedding, Mitzvah, and Quinceanera events. In the past decade much has changed in business and in photography especially. Since the infamy of 9/11 whole industries have seen a shift of their market fundamentals...including mine. In response, the storefront studio was closed in May of '02. To further lower overhead and to take advantage of booming real estate values in the San Joaquin Valley I moved to Stockton, CA. I then further reduced the complexity of my life and the business' overhead by working from my new home and doing the marketing and sales through the Internet. I was now the only the only employee of Choice Photographic. Amazingly, after so many years of being a high profile photographer in San Francisco, I was totally happy with the change. I really loved the "commute": downstairs to work, upstairs to bed...Ha-Ha. The challenge was finding new clients. The dynamics of a "one-man-band" working from home were really different than being in a store-front, having employees and having that visibility. I had to work really hard to find the balance between not enough cash flow and pushing too hard to keep the business from exploding again beyond one person's capability to cope with it. To do this, I was able to maintain my relationships with my Bay Area clientele, and begin new friendships with the many wonderful folks I met in my new city of Stockton. And yes, I still traveled throughout Northern California (and sometimes beyond) doing Corporate PR, event photography, and personal photography for weddings, Mitzvahs, and Quinceaneras. I am grateful for the thousands of former clients who continued to remember me when new events came up in their lives. Between their support and the changes in how and where I ran my business, I was blessed to be able to stay in business, even when so many of my peers had thrown in the towel. On the "Personal" side, if you view the photos on my profile, you'll also know about my 3 grown daughters, 8 granddaughters, my wife Melani...Expand for more
e, and my youngest daughter Harmony. Though the family portrait of the three of us was taken around Thanksgiving of '05 (on the campus of UOP in Stockton), physically, not much has changed about us in the 4+ years since...maybe a bit more gray hair is all. My youngest daughter, Harmony (pictured with us in the sepia-toned image), is completing the 8th grade now, and the passing of time has made the greatest change in her appearance, as you can imagine. What a blessing she has been to our lives! In the photo section of Classmates I captioned the newest portrait of myself with the fact that it was taken to update my company's website. If the ¿real Bio¿ of a man is reflected in his work, I¿d love for you to see it. Those of you who are in business for yourself know all too well that your life becomes your business...and vice-versa. Feel free to go to first choice photo dot com to view a portfolio of my photography. If you'd like to contact me directly, away from this Classmates site, please email me at gjpchoice at earthlink dot net. My phone number is two zero nine, nine one five, five two eight seven. Note: my phone, web and email addresses had to be written this way to get past the "Classmates literary police". For some reason they don't allow us to share our email or website or telephone numbers, so just type in the secret-coded stuff the way you would normally and they should work. Sincerely, Glenn Jay Paulus FEBRUARY, 2010 UPDATE: Much has changed in the past 2 years. The turmoil in the economy and my industry finally shut down my ability to make sales and pay even for basic housing overhead. The real estate market crashed all over, but especially in Stockton which gained notoriety as the foreclosure capital of the US. I wasn't insulated from this kind of crash and the value of my home plummeted 60% from its value in August of '05. We got trapped in a nightmare of debt and business collapse. My wife left in June of '09 to stay with relatives in TN, and we filed for bankruptcy. I finally left Stockton last month after all attempts to save the house from foreclosure failed. I have moved out of CA and am staying with my sister Lorlyn in Ashland, OH; helping in her transition after the passing of her husband, last December. I'm also looking to change careers; at 60, that seems a daunting task. Ultimately, I am looking to move to TN to be near my wife and youngest daughter, now 13 years old. That's a lot to have happen to a person in 2 years, but by the grace of God and a continued trust in his faithfulness, I am keeping an optimistic attitude and look forward to a bright future. May God bless each of you that read this. I ask that He would keep you healthy, strong, and draw you to Himself...as the days ahead may become even more challenging than those we've recently experienced. I ask Him that you all be encouraged, and committed to live a life of integrity...to its fullest...until we meet again. SEPTEMBER 28TH, 2010 update: I write...finally...from Kingsport, TN. God has been faithful; I am here with the intent to become a resident, and attempting to find full-time employment that will make its permanence possible. It's so wonderful to be near my daughter and her mother again! Yes the phraseology has changed since February; Melanie filed for divorce in March and it was final in June. No matter...married or not I moved here to be near my youngest daughter during these critical teen years. I'd love our family to be reunited, but with Melanie or without her...I'm here to start a new life; that WILL happen!
