Gordon's Story
Life
Flunked out of engineering school and into Viet Nam before getting a Biology degree at Eastern and an MD at Georgetown. Married 49+ years to Connie (Marycliff/Eastern) with 3 good kids and a career as eye surgeon in Juneau, Alaska. Retired in 2013, moved to the Seattle area to be around for my 94 y/o mother. Mom passed away in 2015 after a wonderful life. We recently moved to the Austin area to be near the grandkids and downsize from our former 4 acres of lawn duties. Daughters have both moved to Augusta, Maine where youngest works for the State and oldest has returned to grad school in Public Policy. The daughters amazed us in 2014 when the Alaskan son-in-law went into Kidney failure and the older sister donated her kidney. Remarkable experience, Went well all around. The youngest daughter did a "destination wedding" in Adak, Alaska that was just a joy (very primitive/dystopian) then surprised herself and all of us with a honeymoon pregnancy. Beautiful new granddaughter is the delight of her father in particular since this is a stage of life he really didn't expect to reach before his transplant. We did the U-Haul move of their household from Alaska to Maine during the Covid Spring after they moved in midwinter. Did NOT feel welcome crossing the Canadian border!
We've done a fair bit of travel, Did an Asian cruise to start retirement and did a pilgrimage walk from Florence to Rome in Spring of 2017. We did a bit of RV traveling but it just didn't fit for us. Sold the rigs and have settl...Expand for more
ed into new Texas home while dodging Covid 19 for a while. We were very useful as Home school teachers for the grandkids at the outset of the pandemic.
We have made a routine of summer in Maine at AirBnB lake cabins to visit the beautiful youngest granddaughter and dodge Texas heat. This past summer my Son-in-law took a job as a Facilities Manager at an old line (1902) boy's camp and hired me as a seasonal laborer! Riding big lawnmowers, small scale construction projects, plumbing and electric repairs, etc. After 24 years of schooling, my most critical skill involved toilet plungers! By far the oldest employee in Camp!
I really like being retired! Best description I've ever heard is "everyday is Saturday..." Tapped danced through atrial fibrillation last year, now controlled. Keep in touch with Phil and Sue Robinson who are leading much more interesting lives than I would hope for at this age. Starting to hear from old military and med school alumni groups organizing reunions. Really enjoyed the 50th reunion but hoping to see the 75th of our group, eh? Hey, my dad was 2 months short of his when he passed, I swear, he was excited to think he might be the last man standing.
Several of us have started a Class Newsletter that we are sharing on our Facebook group but my job is to track down interested classmates who aren't on social media and snag their email addreses for distribution. Let me know if you're interested and share yours with us. gpreecs at gmail.com if you want to connect. Gordie
