Grace's Story
Life
We have enjoyed owning Tennessee Walking Horses since 1977 and keep them on our acreage. Two were foaled in our barn. We are animal lovers, all kinds, and are content in retirement. I retired from the City of Lynnwood, WA Finance Dept years ago. Leisure time is great. I worked all my life, and now it is time to do what I want, when I want. Free at last!!
My photo here was taken when I was 28 years old. Russell Bigelow and I married right after graduation in 1956 on June 10. Two boys were born to us Nov. 13, 1957 Jeffery arrived at Kirkland, WA. Later Larry was born also in Kirkland, WA on January 8. 1960. (Same birthday as Elvis Presley). They are as different as night and day. Jeff went on to get his B.S. Business Admin. and followed up with 2 classes short of his masters in B.A. What happened?
Well he got married and his life has never been the same. Jobs were scarce at the time, being "over qualified" wasn't an advantage then. Jeff worked as a supv. of drivers at Seattle Pepsi Cola, He has been a sales rep. for a pull-tab company (gambling machines) the past 20 years. Both boys live within 5 miles from our place.
Larry has had a battle with additions to alcohol and drugs, never married, but the father of twin girls when he was in his late 30's. They just turned 16 this last June. They live most likely in Ohio, have been adopted together when they were 2 yrs old by a childless couple who wanted them if they ever were available. We know they are happy, loved much, and have not had to deal with fighting, addicted parents. They will be told of us when and if they sometime are interested in finding us. It has been hard for us, but sometimes when you love much it means letting go for them to have an environment free of addicted parents.
We lived atop a hill in Kirkland across Lake Washington and above what was then Sand Point Navel Station, Seattle until 1960 when we bought a house on Seattle's north city limits. Before and in between the boys I worked for Boeing Airplane Co. in Renton, WA. When Russelll finished his stint in the Army, he too worked at Boeing Swing Shift. We both liked the climate here, and here we still are. After 17 years in North Seattle, somebody just had to build an apt. complex right where we lived. Here in Brier for 35 years we perched on 2 1/2 acres of hilltop that had everything and more than before. Room for a horse!!!! which...Expand for more
became two, and then 3 Walking horses. That made my life Complete!! Currenty a neighbor girl of 15 talked us into keeping her horse here. In return she helps out with the work involved and makes sure the 4 keep in top shape.
After Boeing and the last child, I went to work for Pacific Fruit & Produce in Seattle, a branch of their home offices in Minneapolis, MN. After 2 years the branch here was phased out, and merged with MN operations. The boss was kind enough to get me a good job at a brokerage company in South Seattle without an interview. I walked in the office there to interview. Instead they wanted me to come to work the next morning. I did and was there 21 years working for a brokerage company (Mfg. Rep) running an order desk and inventories of warehouse local stocks.and putting together orders for 40,000 truck loads of Star-Kist tuna from the plant in San Pedro, CA.
I left after 21 years with a very nice retirement package that later helped remodel our cottage into a real 2-story house. It was nice at home until the employment agency sent me temp. jobs. One of them was for the city of Lynnwood, WA in Finance/Admin. The Temp Agency just happened to have a Marshfield, WI employee, who said anybody from Marshfield, WI had to be a good choice and sent me on over to City Hall as a temp. Purchasing Agent until replacement arrived. Later duty was in accts. payable. So I switched to payables from receivables in a big hurry. The Mayor liked my work ethics and typing ability and convinced the city council to hire me full time
without the tests and interviews new employees were required to do. After 18 years with the city, I took retirement. The retirement party was great with 3 of my friends bringing the equipment for kareoke and sang a couple hours. There was dancing and a friend wrote a special poem to be read about me. It ended with the Mayor bringing his grand Harley Davidson motorcycle to the door to take me for a ride. I hung on tight and found out riding that thing once was enough for my entire lifetime.
Facebook and games on line are good entertainment for me.of Overian horses in Queensland. The computer takes me wherever I want to go by online maps of the world complete with clear photos via satillte and zoom lens.
There, you got maybe more story than needed, so read with you want and leave the rest.
I retired June 30, 2004 from the city of Lynnwood.
