Grant's Story

Life After I left St. Johns, I spent a year in college in Oklahoma. I left there after my freshman year for, among other things, moving the Dorm-daddy's Fiat into the Common Room and bricking up both doors to his apartment. Shortly thereafter, the Dean of Men called me into his office, and informed me that Phillips University would try to struggle along the next year without my presence. From there I went to Cripple Creek, Colorado, a little mining town which 100 years ago had furnished the gold upon which Denver was built. Now it gets by on legalized gambling; at the time it was a tourist attraction, if you were willing to drive 65 miles over the mountains from Colorado Springs to get there. I worked in a little store, making and selling Mountain Dulcimers, guitars and tchochkes to tourists. The day after my 19th birthday, I awoke on top of a mountain, miles from anywhere, nude, with 3 other people similarly attired. To this day I have no idea how we got there. I spent several years moving around: I lived in a one-room log cabin halfway up a mountain in Montezuma, Colorado, with two other guys, a girl, a dog, and a wood stove. No running water, no electricity, no door. I moved to Colorado Springs, had a business building custom furniture, met the first great love of my life and lost him through abject stupidity and sheer bloodymindedness, not to mention incipient alcoholism. I then moved to Denver and became the poolside bartender at the Fairmont Hotel. I later ended up staring at that selfsame pool from the window of my fourth-floor suite at the Kenmark Hotel (There's nothing like living on 17th Street, ask anyone). I wrote a song for Kevin, entitled ;Love's Like a Line; it's the only one from that era that is still in my lineup; the lyrics are a bit wet, but the tune is a good one, and fun to play. Steven found me at my lowest. A ye...Expand for more
ar after we met, I was seriously trying to kill myself. That was not his fault. I think he loved me a lot more than I ever loved him, and he saved my life. I regained consciousness on February 17, 1984, passed through more chaos. A year later, I found some peace. Steven left and found another guy to rescue, even worse off than I had been. He did it, too. Steven died of AIDS shortly thereafter; too soon. (I met the guy when he wandered into my coffeehouse years later and he told me all about it.) Pax vobiscum. In 1989, I went to more than one funeral a month for 8 months. I currently live in San Francisco, in a Victorian half-flat with 7 guitars, a blackface Fender Deluxe Reverb, a highly-modded Fender Blues Deluxe, 5 computers, 2 surfboards, 4 coffeemakers (don't ask) a Leica R-4, assorted mics, synths and bangy-clangy things, and a Ducati 907 Paso. I have the privilege of sharing my life with a truly extraordinary man: whip-smart, accomplished, talented, nurturing and a damned good chef. He is the light of my morning and the stars of my night. I love my job, the first position I have ever found which provides as much room to advance as I care to take on, and which gives me the opportunity to make a difference in many, many people's lives daily. After 12 years I still look forward to going to the office every morning. In no particular order, I like: Jean-Pierre Jeunet, Fuji Velvia, Hamachi, Allison Krause, Ian Gillan, Ian Anderson, Richard Dawkins, Issac Bonewits, Harlan Ellison, Chip Delany, GeorgeL cables, coffee and croissants at De Lessio's on a Sunday morning, dinner at Zaoh on Friday night, Landmark Education, fountain pens, Linus Torvald's software, Leo Fender's guitars and amps, and Robert Hunter's words. I dislike: Bill Gates' software, oysters, Fox News, junk faxes and George W. Bush. There is nothing like a Grateful Dead show.
