Greg's Story

My story: Well after working in construction for several years after graduation. I was givin an opportunity in 1982 while working on a project for Clark County DD, to work in the woodshop assisting handicaped individuals producing products for area businesses. After about a year I became a procurement specialist working within the sales department, and later became the manager over all the sales staff. In time I have moved up several more times and currently manage all business operations. Well that's enough about work stuff. I have a great wife, my soul mate, we have 20 years under our belt and counting, we were married on July 4,. Together were kind of like the Brady Bunch I had two boys and one girl, she had two girls We had lots to do when the kids while they were in high school, its kind of slowed down a bit now. We have one just out of college. She is a teacher. Our other daughter is rasing a family and she is married and works in the medical field. My youngest boy went into the Air National Guard for six years, finished a degree at Clark State and then went to work for Navistar in Dallas, Texas. He is a line manager and seems to really like it. My other boy has moved back to Ohio leaving Mississippi, working in Urbana. Looking forward to getting time to spend with the grand kids. The future, I Hope to retire in 3-4 years and maybe start up a small business of my own. My staff say I will never retire maybe they are right. We also like traveling and spending time at the lake have a small cottage now it is nice place to relax. Back in the day in School, Elmwood school had a lot of good teachers, I remember Miss. Rust in particular she looked so mean I would not even go to school at first, later on found out she was one of the best teachers I ever had. Schafer school- I remember Miss Hill we had a wild science class we had the best of times though. How about Mr. Fetty I think every student that went to scheafer had a story to tell about him, he was very interesting to watch and see who he would pick on next. Oh the good times we had! South High - Well I was there about a year, I remember wrestling at South, weigh in was about 119 pounds I remember running the lines and bleachers to get down to next weight class, I remember Bruce White when we were wrestling for the next match, just like it was yesterday. JVS- Got into carpentry and met alot of great people, Greg Fisher, Vinh Tran, Tim Johnson and others. Had some great friends back then looking up a few of them to see how they have been. My Hero's, Well I could not have asked for better parents. Dad was always a hard worker and always provided, mom worked just as hard. Over the years I...Expand for more
have met many people and from time to time learned alot from these individuals. One of the best was about 11 years ago, I was asigned to help give tours to the possible canidates for a new position within our company. This person would also become my new boss... Well I was told that the next tour would be with a retired full bird Colonel. He was also rumored to go into a base and bring it to a record setting high standard to far exceed normal standards. Well I meet this guy... and he is like a John Wayne look alike he got the voice to match. He starts talking and he got a story a minute. He seems to be a little nervous. But if you remember me at all I was the one shaking in my boots! Well a few days later I find out he's got the job. Well I thought my days of working were coming to an end. It's now been a week he was now geting settled in, he then tells me that I need to move my office. I think to myself ok here it comes!!! He then said inside his office he wants to share this huge office with me. I am blown away! The more I got to know him the more I see the real man. He was very caring, like's to help out anybody thats in trouble and very old fashioned. I witness this man donate to all kinds of causes each time he heard of someone having a hard time. So here I am moving into new territory thinking to my self what am I getting into, I am used to dealing with higher ups but not all day every day, one on one. But as before he's got a story a minute he got a great since of humor, alot like me. He has alot of stories of his military times he was feared by all as he would say to me, his hero was Patton if that gives you a little clue to how he was looked upon by his troops. He either liked you or you were history. Well if you ever watched the movie Patton, I felt like the guy who was the one that asked Patton if he needed a drink after the bad news of him not getting the command that he assumed he would get. My new boss missed the core but had settled for some work to keep him busy. Many a time he would say to me that I rooked him into coming to work there, he then would laugh and would say that it was meant to be. He actually turned out to be a great boss, still did'nt take any crap from higher ups. Later with his health starting to fail he decided to retire and try to get better he had found out that he had cancer. He kept in contact with me, like a good friend we played golf and we had other good times but after about 9 years of knowing this great man, he lost his battle with cancer. If we need to have a list of hero's in our lives. Well he takes a high ranking on my list, among others. I will truly miss him my good friend Ty Zerby Ret.Air Force Colonel WPAFB Ohio.
