Greg's Story
Life
I am recently remarried, and I moved to Washington State three years ago.
I was in the army reserves for a while & nearly went to the first Gulf war, worked in medical research for several years, then the Telecom industry, and now I'm a writer working at Microsoft.
I left Slayton as a senior and graduated from Ely high school, then went to college in Duluth. I spent a lot of years in school, partly because I partied my brains out and partly because I became a professional student. Besides Minnesota, I've lived in Texas, Tennessee, Colorado, and now Washington. I lived in Denver for 13 years before moving.
I took a vacation in Minnesota this last summer and rode my bike up the north shore of Lake Superior, then went on a fishing trip in the BWCA. I also stopped by Slayton for the first time in almost 30 years and took a walk through the halls of the high school this last spring while on a trip to visit relatives in Mankato. It was quite an experience seeing Slayton again. Surprisingly, not much has changed.
School
The thing I recall most about Slayton was the fact that I had to leave for my senior year because we moved to Ely. That really sucked, but I'll always remember cross-country races, learning how to drink, my best friend Mark Jensen and his brother Scott. The crush I had on Gwen Gengler and how I had no nerve to ask any girls out at all in high school.
The only time I had any success with girls in high school was when I took a trip to Germany with the German club in 11th grade. Oddly enough, Gwen was on that trip too, but I did nothing. It was a great trip though.

th the car. That's definitely something I recall well. I think I was grounded for 6 months. He left out the part where we pretended to be constuction workers making a microwave tower and visited the owner of the local mall to tell him we were tearing up the parking lot - man did he freak out, or playing chicken with people on the road. That didn't turn out so well, which is why we ended up taking the back roads and ran into the ditch. I still recall the smell of Boones Farm strawberry wine all over the car.
I also remember riding around in Dayle Dirk's yellow Nova, getting high as a kite, and shooting Coots out the window.
College
When I went away to college in the "big city" of Duluth, I remember being placed in a dorm room with 2 roommates: Bruce and Richie. Both were huge partiers, which didn't help me with my grades but did help make a lot of friends. I'm amazed I didn't fail out of school what with keggers three or four times a week and whatever else we could find to get high.
After partying for 3 years, I left college for the army reservers. That seemed to straighten me out and I went back to UMD and finished my degree, then went on to grad school.
It's funny that with all the partying I did, I don't hang with any friends from college. I think Richie (Richard Elker) joined the army, and I did see Bruce one more time after I moved to Colorado. I wonder what those guys are up to, as well as some of my other roommates like Warren, Dave, TJ, and others.
Workplace
My favorite place to work has been Time Warner Telecom. I just love that company. It doesn't have the pay or benefits of my current employer, but it was like working in a big family. I loved it.
