Greg's Story

Life I was born in Atlanta, where I have lived for most of my life. I enjoy keeping in touch with my classmates from Ben Hill Elementary School, Heidelberg American High School, Therrell High School and Emory University. Some of you who are reading this were classmates and fellow "Army brats" in Heidelberg. When I moved to Heidelberg in 1959, the Army life was brand new to me. My stepfather (Red Muer -- now 80 and still going strong) had married my mother in 1957. He was a career Army officer and Heidelberg was his last overseas posting in the Army. I temporarily left some life-long school chums in Atlanta, attended high school in Heidelberg for grades 8, 9 and 10 in the class of 1964, then returned to Atlanta for grades 11 and 12 at Therrell High School. I am very fortunate to have good friends from both schools. While living in Heidelberg, I played drums in the band and was very active in Troop 1 of the Transatlantic Council, the first American Scout troop to be organized in Germany after WW II. I have returned to Heidelberg 5 or 6 times, most recently for the all-class reunion in October, 2004, organized by Cheryl through her Pawpits website. This reunion was special because we attended classes at HHS, then went to a bonfire pep rally and a football game at Patrick Henry Village. I am also active with the Therrel High School class of 1964, which has reunions every 5 years and a most remarkable e-mail network of alums who receive regular updates about classmates, teachers and others from our classmate Richard Petty. Thanks, Richard, for your many Panther Updates and for all you do to keep us together. My list of high school sports does not take very long to read: wrestling. I will not be remembered as an athlete, but I do remember many exciting football and basketball games I watched from the sidelines as a yearbook photographer, along with Neil Langford, my photographic sidekick. I also played drums in Therrell's award-winn...Expand for more
ing band. I attended college at Emory University and during that time I also studied at the University of Frankfurt, Germany, for one semester and at the American University in Washington for another semester. When I graduated from Emory in 1968, the draft was going strong, so I volunteered for Officer Candidate School at Ft. Benning. Following basic training in Ft. Dix and more training as a combat engineer (building bridges and roads, using explosives and disarming land mines, among other useful skills) at Ft. Leonard Wood, I spent 6 months in OCS at Ft. Benning and was commissioned as a 2nd Lt in November, 1969. A year as an instructor in the Infantry School, where I taught all you need to know about heavy mortars and being a forward observer, was followed by 9 months as a rifle platoon leader in Vietnam, up north in I Corps near Chu Lai and Danang, from December 1970 to August 1971. I thus became a third-generation combat veteran: my grandfather was a soldier in the trenches in France in WW I and my father was a Navy pilot in the Pacific in WW II. After the Army, I graduated from Emory Law School in 1974 and I have practiced in Atlanta since then. I have been in private practice for 23 years and I also did in-house work as General Counsel and SVP of Bank South and Bank South Corporation. Since 1995, I have worked mainly as an elder law attorney, in a solo practice, helping seniors and disabled people with long-term care, guardianships and estate planning. I have been married to a lovely lady for 23 years, Mary Spraker, and we have four children: Henry, who is 19 and a college freshman, and 12-year-old triplet daughters, Lydia, Louise and Ellie. Mary and I are both Girl Scout leaders and we enjoy family camping, canoeing and hiking. I also volunteer once at month at our local VA hospital at a free legal clinic for veterans. I would be very glad to hear from classmates at any of my schools.
