Gregory's Story

I was born in Ohio, I attended Sheridan High School through the end of 10th Grade. In the summer of 1981, I moved to Mesa Arizona (a suburb of Phoenix) where I attended Dobson High School. I also attended the district's vocational school, Mesa Central, where I studied Radio & Television Production. I graduated from high school mid-term in January 1983 and attended Arizona Tech, where my father was an instructor, to study drafting and computer aided design. In 1984, I started classes at Mesa Community College as a part-time student in Electronics then switched majors to Broadcasting. In 1989, I transferred to Arizona State University, then in 1991 to Northern Arizona University where I graduated from with my BS in Broadcasting in 1992. My family moved back to Ohio the following year. During that time, I worked at like KTSP-TV the CBS affiliate in Phoenix, NBC 4 in Columbus, WCOL/WNCI, Sunny95, 97.1 The Fan, and The Columbus Blue Jackets Radio Network doing production and engineering. I became involved in computers as a result of the increased use of automation systems and business networks in the broadcast industry. Consolidation in the broadcast industry had reduced the number of engineering jobs in the central Ohio market. When Clear Channel Communications bought Nationwide Communications Incorporated, my position was eliminated so I changed my career path to Information Technology. I worked at DeVry University for 6 years holding several IT positions. While there, I took advantage of my employee education benefit and ...Expand for more
earned my Master of Information Systems Management in 2008. I worked in IT in the Broadcasting and Education industries for the next several years, then in 2014 I accepted teaching positions with Newark City Schools and Central Ohio Technical College teaching classes in Media Production and Computer Technology. I also started working on my second master’s degree, a Master of Education in Educational Technology, to meet the requirements to teach. I completed it in 2019 and decided to transfer it to Ohio University and pursue a PhD so I could become a professor and teach full-time at the university level. As of Summer 2023, I am in the final stages of completing my PhD in Mass Communications. My research area is in emerging communications technologies such as Virtual Reality, Augmented Reality, Motion Capture, 360-degree cinema, and Ambisonic audio. These are cutting edge technologies that marry information technology and media production. I work at Ohio University in Athens full-time while taking my last 3 classes part-time. If all goes well, I will complete my PhD in 2025. In my personal life, I am straight and still single (the side effect of pursuing this much graduate school while working full-time is a lack of personal time, I basically have been working a 7-day work week). I live in a house that my late father and I built in 1999 near Sheridan High School (a full circle, back where this story began). I have 3 cats and 1 elderly small dog. I’m looking forward to reviving my personal life when I finish my doctorate.
