Gregory's Story
20 September 2021----I have been retired for the past 8 years and live in Clearwater Florida. Had a daughter, Heather, shortly after high school while attending GR Junior College. Heather has 5 children and has 5 grand kids which make me a great grandfather. Imagine that! We never have had a close relationship but communicate periodically. I received a BA Degree from Western Michigan University in Chemistry and Biology in 1972. I worked for Amway in Ada, Michigan for a couple of years as a chemist upon graduation. Hated it! I decided to switch gears and went back to school and earned a Cosmetology license in GR at Chic University of Cosmetology. I worked at various salons while dancing for the Grand Rapids Civic Ballet. In 1978 I moved from Michigan to Santa Barbara, California. There, I danced with the Royal Ballet of Santa Barbara for a few years. In Santa Barbara I enjoyed a very successful and lucrative salon business. I lived in Santa Barbara for about 25 years. In my late forties I became very bored and got an itch I had to scratch and went back to school at The University of California Santa Barbara and received my second BA degree in German language and literature. In 1998 I gave up my business and moved from Santa Barbara to Berlin Germany and lived there for about ...Expand for more
2 years to sharpen my language skills. I attended German language school and made Berlin my hub for traveling extensively throughout Europe. From Berlin I moved to Washington DC. I had a girlfriend there and went to visit. Didn’t have a clue what I wanted to do and one day leafing through the Washington Post I saw an advert for a full ride scholarship at The George Washington University in Special Education. I applied, was accepted. I received a Masters Degree in Special Ed. with an emphasis on Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED). I started teaching special ed. in Maryland and later in DC. I purchased a house in downtown DC where I met a friend, Dennis, with whom after 10 years married him when the law allowed it. We just celebrated our 10 year anniversary. We have been together for 21 years total. Live has been a wonderful journey. Traveling became my hobby early in my life in Grand Rapids and I continue to do so as often as possible. I have been to over 30 countries and still counting. I retired from teaching and moved to Florida about 8 years ago. The last vacation I was able to enjoy was in January 2020 cruising down the Nile and visiting Cairo and Dubai. Vacations have come to a halt since the Covid 19 pandemic. I will be celebrating my 71th birthday on 8 November 2020.
