Gregory's Story

Life There are many people that I remember from my school years though none with which I have kept in touch. Most people probably don't remember me if they ever even knew that I existed back then. Then there were a few that I considered good friends and many that I was too shy to even begin a friendship. Well now I sit here, 50 years old. It is so very difficult to actually think that a half century has past in my life. Growing up in a town like Fair Haven and Rumson, many would have thought that my life was lacking in many material ways. It very well may have, but anything that I may have missed materially, was made up one hundredfold in the intangible yet very real terms of love, acceptance and encouragement provided by my family and close friends. Looking back, it may seem that I have gone no where. I live one block from the house where I was raised and still count as my best friend, a man I met 45 years ago. My grandfather was born in a small house on Clay Street and my mother was born in a house on Willow Street. Captain Little of the Albertina was a distant cousin as was the lovely Viola Sickles. My Great grand father settled here in the mid 1800s and married a French Indian woman where they raised five children. My grand father born in 1895 married Ida, his wife of fifty years. Together they raised five children in the house where I was later raised. It is families like mine that had made Fair Haven the beautiful place where living was good even though the work was hard. It was the quaint style of this little fishing village that attracted the upper class from New York looking for a place to summer. Unfortunately, little by little, all those city people seeking the cozy life in this small town of close knit families are what has brought about its demise. It is no longer recognizable as the little village where neighbors knew each other and cared for each other in very tangble ways. All of the outsiders that have come here have torn down, piece by piece, the very nature of what it meant to live in Fair Haven. Now, instead of neighborhood kids getting together for a game of stickball, we have T ball, Little League and Soccor all with there colorful garb making the once happy playful children into win at all cost semi pros before they can even ride a bicycle. Gone are the families that used to spend the days at the dock and on the beaches, fishing and crabbing, just enjoying a happy life in this little town. Now we have a police force that is decked out in SWAT team gear,to chase speeders. We have a police chief that makes $107,000.00, more than twice the average income of middle America. His duties are giving talks on the dangers of drugs at school and waving from his patrol car in the many local parades. The old Lovette Nursery that used to be home to foxes and the only known wild turkey population in the state of New Jersey is a vast green field ...Expand for more
of neatly mown grass for baseball and soccer... by permit only! The cute little refreshment stand that was to be funded by volunteers and local donations at a cost of about $30,000 has turned into a town sponsered building that has been under construction for several years and now costs well over $80,000 in tax payer dollars. But wait, now they want to add tens of thousands of watts of lights on huge towers for night games that can also double as cell phone towers. Enough is enough. I own a small, 1,200 sq.ft. home that is taxed to the tune of well over $6,000 a years.Old people, the poorer people that made this town what it is today, can no longer afford to live here. We,the original founders of this town, can no longer live here because of the whims and fancy of the outsiders. No longer can a homeowner place a for sale sign in the car windshield, neither can we park anything but an automobile in the driveway. All boats and trailers must be hidden and you will be fined if a neighbor can see your trash cans! Update 5/14/2008 Well... we are finally, officially, physically out of the place where I grew up. Hallelujah... no more $6,000 plus taxes, no more ordinances telling me what I can and cannot do on MY OWN property! No streets lined with cars and landscapers doing the normal property maintenence that home owners USED to do themselves... no weed eaters and leaf blowers outside my window at 8:00 AM every single friday. My dog, Lucy, is no longer confined to 13,000 sq ft with fences on all sides and I no longer have to worry about neighbors stealing my cats and dropping off in God knows where because they dig in a flower bed. Now my taxes are $600 and I have two homes on 30 acres of almost heaven! I had to laugh at myself last week... I had gone to a store some 30 miles from home. On the way back there must have been 20 cars that passed in the other direction and I silently asked myself... "where is all this traffic coming from?" Then I realized the county fair grounds had closed a short time ago and all this traffic was simply the people going home. Suddenly, this over whelming urge to smile widely overcame me and I felt gleeful, finally, I was truely "home!" I used to laugh at the locals when I came to visit and they would complain about the HEAVY traffic today... they had passed about a dozen cars on the way to the store. It is really odd sometimes... In Fair Haven Hummers are a regular site at the Acme or the library... I mean a HUMMER, can they be serious?! Out here where we HAVE TO USE use four wheel drive vehicles, I have seen 2 hummers in the last two years and I think it might have been the same one I saw twice. Here, where we NEED four wheel drive, we prefer the Jeep in any size, shape or configuration and the wives quite often have a great little Metro to tool around and run to the store... 10 miles in one direction or 7 in the other.
