Gregory's Story

Life I was born in Ohio in 1949. I cracked my skull falling out of my crib at age two...by age three i had eaten mushrooms out of of our front lawn and had to have my stomach pumped. At four, in 1953, I contracted polio and spent 6 months totally paralyzied in an iron lung. My Italian grandfather gave me my first job at age 6 being the waterboy on his rose nursery. Lugging a two gallon glass jug up & down endless rows of roses launched my work ethic. My family moved to Central Florida when I was eight. I had tremendous adventures biking, camping canoeing....not one of the popular kids at school....I became the class clown which limited my beatings from the school bullies to just once a week or so. I also became an Eagle Boy Scout, Sr patrol Leader, Order of Arrow and (drum roll) Jr tomahawk (ah the pinacle of success)> In 1965 my family moved again to St Thomas in the Virgin Islands. At first I was very homesick...it seemed like we were on Pluto instead of being exceptionally lucky to be in a Caribbean paradise. When school started in Sept, I began to meet kids like me (okay, no one is quite like me...but, you know what I mean)...and things picked up. Four of us went to my headmaster at All saints Parish School in Charlotte Amalie. We convinced him that we wanted to start playing competitive football with the other high schools. At first we were the bees knees...our only real competition was Antillies - the rich kid school - but by my senior year, the native kids, who were exceptionally athletic...and quite scary...learned the game and our razzle dazzle...my class had 17 people in it, Charlotte Amalie High had nearly 3,000 kids...it was like Little big Horn from that point on. I played QB and in my senior year got crushed returning a kick-off, resulting in Physical therapy daily during school. I also played basketball (we got beat once 62 - 12 by Charlottle Amalie)...but I was singled out by our coach during the awards ceremony with a gold basket ball charm...I certainly wasn't the best on the team, far from it...but I...Expand for more
think he liked my rose nursery water boy work ethic. I also played shortstop and left field for the baseball team. I left St Thomas after my senior year...a year in which I was Yearbook Editor, MVP of the Newspaper and, unfortunately still, class clown, leading to me getting a certificate instead of a diploma...what a night that was! Anyway, I came back to Central Florida, and along with my friend Craig Thomson, we drove a 1962 Chevy Biscayne (with no a/c) to California for the Summer of Love. Along the way we siphoned gas from state parks and suburban neighborhoods...we did this despite the fact that gas was as cheap as 17 cents/gallon. In the desert, it was so hot the wax from the surfboard would melt and drip on to the windshield. We did all sorts of stupid things....its a wonder I'm still alive...including climbing out of the window, doing 70 mph, on the top of the car, and back to the trunk to fetch the car key still in the trunk. Craig one time got mad at me while he was driving because I couln't find the map in the back seat so, instead of stopping he continued driving and looked in the back....wham, we smacked into the rear of a car stopped at a stop sign. The road was a tee and you had to turn either left or right. the mexican woman we hit was the sherrif's wife in Pleasant valley California. She told us to follow her to the police station to see her husband...she turned right and we hauled ass left and got out of Dodge. That was a wonderful trip...La Jolla, Ocenaside, Sequoia nat'l Forest, Yosemite, LA, Malibu, San Francisco...and haight Ashbury. The songs on the radio were White Rabbit, Light My Fire, If You Are Going to San Francisco, You're Just Too Good To Be True, Good Vibrations (Ok, that was 66, but we still heard it often). Hippies...it was great...Flower Children everywhere...we had student deferments at that time, but by the time we returned to Cen, College Majored in Theatre at University of Florida...graduated in 1972. In 1973, formed my own theatre, The Hippodrome, and remained there until 1988...
