Guy's Story
Hello all you Medical Lake High School visitors! Most of you are probably wondering who I am and why I'm listed as going to Medical Lake. Glad you asked- I attended MLHS in my Junior Year, i.e., Sept 1976 through mid- March 1977. I was the one who ran for Treasurer at the request of that wonderful encourager Mr. Boehme, and ...got about 4 votes! :) Cheryl Thorpe was my campaign manager. I enjoyed Mrs. Kingrey's English Class, Mr. Jantz in history, and of course had a couple of run ins with the irrepressible Vice Principal Russel Brown. Very sorry I did not run on the Cross Country team for MLHS. My excuse was that the activity bus would only take me a 1-1/2 miles from my house after practice, and I had no vehicle. In retrospect, I could have used the additional exercise. A missed opportunity. I ran varsity for Colville the previous year (Sophomore), and in the first part of my senior year; in mid-season we moved to Cheney and I made varsity there. Cheney CC ended up co-champions of the Frontier league - a stacked team- about 18 seconds between 2nd place behind Jay Martin and 7th on Varsity. At the final all league race I remember seeing Robert Hodge, Ralph Rodriguez, Danny Anderson, Neal Brown and perhaps a couple of others. Thanks MLHS for being part of my journey - best to you all.
I am mr guy at gci dot net "please email me if you'd like to talk, all ye mysterious vistors"...I do know some of you..how 'bout some adding pictures and stories on your pages?
What a great reunion it was, eh, class of '78? You really are an amazing bunch of characters! Who says small town folks are dull? And who would have thunk that CHS could have produced such a diverse and vibrant group....?
For those of you who were not able to attend (or knew me from elsewhere), I was voted "most changed since high school", which I take as a compliment of the highest order.
I was also presented with my 1978 annual, which I paid for in 1977 and never picked up. It had my name on it (spelled right!) and not only survived 30 years and at least one school move, but was in immaculate condition!
I won't single out anyone, but at least four or five of you gave me some unforgettable memories. Reconnection, new perspectives, closure, warmth and fuzziness after all these years.
Cathartic is the one word to describe it. As I drove away from the initial meeting, all I could say was "what a night!".
For new visitors, here is the initial official Mr. Guy J. Crockroft blurb/smirk/drivel/manifesto......
Mo' fun later......
Greeting Classmates, Web Surfers and Wal-Mart Shoppers! Yes, it's really me. I am alive! This is Mr. Guy J. Crockroft, the man, the myth, the legend, coming to you live from the windswept, frozen tundra of Alaska.
Since you've seen me, I've been a punk rocker, woodchopper, gas pumper, carpet layer, family man, public servant, pundit, writer, sunday school teacher, preacher, stand up comic, marathon runner, 200 average bowler, and a traveler across the great USA, seeing all 50 states.
That nasty "Crockroft's the head of the Illuminati" rumor keeps popping up, but like I keep saying: I can neither confirm nor deny, assuming such a secret society actually exists. And that's all I got to say about that!.
I grew up (sorta) in Colville-from 2nd grade to early Senior year, with short diversions to other Jr. High & High schools - Calvary Christian Academy, Kettle Falls (boo! hiss!!), Medical Lake & Cheney- went to those places to "broaden my horizons". i.e., to meet new, fascinating, exotic people - and annoy them.
After running away from Colville....uh, I mean-running for Colville, on the Cross Country team in our senior year, I moved to Cheney, where I ran for their Cross County team.
Like John Kerry might say "I actually did run for Colville before I ran against them."
Seems appropriate, somehow....
At Cheney, I was part of the Varsity team that set a school record on our home course (2.5 miles) - everyone finished in under 14:00 minutes!! (I made it easy - ran 13:58). We almost won the Frontier League title, but came up a little short in the final.
Next stop was Spokane Falls Community College (aka "Harvard West") where I majored in Public Buffoonery, with minors in Abnormal Psychology, French and Bowling. Graduated "Laude, How Come?"
After all that, I left town as soon as humanly possible and headed for the rainforest paradise of southeast Alaska. I have worked for the St...Expand for more
ate of Alaska since 1983, in procurement and contracting.
Yes, I'm with the government, and I'm here to help. Trust me.
I tearfully (or is that "cheerfully"?) left Colville in 1977, and 2 days later met the girl that would become my wife - and still is!!!! My wonderful wife Martha (who never nags) and I have three great kids - Jessica, Anne and Jeremiah. Raised them all in the Baptist Church. One of the highlights of our lives. We are very thankful for the way things turned out and wouldn't change that for anything.
We have traveled to all 50 states together. The Crockroft family lived the dream! Took five trips to see all those other States, but we made it, safely all the way.
Only had 2 flat tires, The first one was in New York City, where I ran over an island to escape oncoming traffic.
Everyone in the car said I was going the wrong way down a "One Way Street" or something like that. I'm still not convinced- maybe all those other cars were going the wrong way - did they ever think about that?
The other flat tire was all the way across the continent in the Yukon Territory (I know, that's not a state). Probably ran over a golden spike or something.
Saw many amazing places in our fabulous country - the Golden Gate Bridge, the Empire State Building, Niagara Falls, the Mall of America, the Redwoods in California, the Grand Canyon, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY; Lost Wages, Nevada, Hershey's Chocolate World in Pennsylvania,The Mustard Museum in Wisconsin, the UFO Museum in Roswell, New Mexico, The Gateway Arch in St. Louis, The Ballpark at Arlington, the Metrodome, Wrigley Field in Chicago, etc..even saw the Cubs win!
Jessica my running daughter (see the "now" picture - we ran a marathon together in 2006) graduated college last year with a degree in Human Performance. Her College highlight was her year at Oregon State where she was on the women's Rugby Team. One time she called us very excited about getting a black eye in a game. She thought it was real cool... "that's, uh, swell... Jess..."
Son Jeremiah just finished his first year of college and is a Wal-Martian. He wants to be a teacher and return to his High School. He's already subbed there a few times. Remember Mr.Kotter, anyone?
Jeremiah picked up my other sport - bowling (get your mind out of the gutter!). He had high average in his league as a senior, just like I did. Like Hank Jr. said, it's a "Family Tradition". I bowl on Tueday nights and average over 200, but am still trying for the elusive 300 game.
Oldest daughter Anne has a rare condition called Williams Syndrome. She is an absolute joy to all who know her. The Doctors call it a "cocktail personality". She is small and developmentally delayed, but brings happiness to folks she talks to for even a couple of minutes, and we get to be with her all the time! She says lots of funny things, in a Yogi Berra type way.
Classmates, we all shared something special -childhood and the formative years. Colville really was a really swell place then, and must still be pretty good now. Some friends of mine from Alaska have even moved there, on purpose! Go figure.
How happy-go-lucky we were in those heady Col-villian days of yore!! Baseball, hot dogs, apple pie and the Auto Vue! A swimming pool and a bowling alley, the Copper Bowl. It's so old now, it's probably turning green. Yep Kanum park. Lots of fun in the sun.
Class of '78 was first in the new Jr. High School, with teachers like Ms. Gundersen, who once had us write an essay beginning with "once upon a thumbtack". Joe Maxwell philosophizing about Jackie Robinson. Bill Denholm waxing eloquent about Manifest Destiny. Mr. Burkholz always watching the second hand get to 12 before starting class. Art class with the inimitable Mr. Ballo. We ahhhh, made ahhh, copper enamels, after buying saw blades for 12 cents each.
Dancing with the all those stunningly beautiful girls. (ok, usually watching other guys dance with all those stunningly beautiful girls.) The great and near great. Watching the CHS sports legends. (You guys were pretty good, and almost as cool as you thought you were.)
Now that we have Classmates to get us all back together once again, it's time a for big group hug. Ahhhhh! Feel better? I sure do!
Class of '78, I salute you. Mr. Guy J. Crockroft
Special thanks to the late great Bob Heberling for being a friend and introducing me to Led Zeppelin - World's Greatest Band.
