Guy's Story

Life After High School, went to IU. Still was not sure what I wanted to do. Dropped out, worked odd jobs for a couple of years. During this time I married Janet Petersen in 1980 and it has been great ever since. God has blessed us with three wonderful sons, Daniel (1985, currently attending Columbia College Chicago), Patrick (1988, just joined the Navy and finished Boot Camp in October 08) and Peter (1991, currently contemplating joining the Coast Guard). Joined the Navy in 1983. Worked in Nuclear Power on Submarines as an Electrician's Mate for 12 years. Finished college while in Navy and graduated from Southern Illinois University (go Salukis!). While we were in the Navy we lived in IL, WA, ID, FL and VA. Got out of the Navy and started a career in cryogenic air separation. Worked at Praxair in Illinois, then for Messer Grisheim and then Air Liquide in Mt. Vernon, IN as Plant Manager. Currently working as Facilities Manager in Mt. Vernon, IN for Babcock & Wilcox. Also currently playing in two Blue Grass Bands. Fields of Home and The Clabber Boys. Fields of Home has just started a facebook page.Check it out. From there you can see our website. College Went to IU, played in the Marching Hundred and made it into the basketball band. Great times, great roommate my Freshman year. But just was not focused. Frustration not knowing what I wanted to do, combined with a lack of discipline led to poor academic performance (but I did have a good time, i.e. too much party!). While in the Navy, went to Southern Illinois University and got a BS in Business. Rough working one full time job and a part time job while going t...Expand for more
o school full time, but had to keep the family fed. Military 1983 - Boot Camp, Basic Electricity and Electronics, and Electrician's Mate A School - Great Lakes, IL. - Schools were great, not that hard (if you studied) and it was nice being married, living off base and not having to live in the barracks. 1984 - Nuclear Power School Orlando, FL - WOW. What a wake up call. Six months of school, starting with the basics up through heat transfer, nuclear physics, advanced water chemistry. Definately homework mania. 3-5 hours of work every night. But still, nice to live off base. 1984 - Nuclear Prototype Training Unit, Idaho Falls ID - Hour long bus rides each way to school in the middle of the desert. Twelve hour rotating shifts. Damn glad I qualified early and got off of that rotation. 1984 - 1989 - USS Ohio (SSBN 726) Gold Crew (Log Room Yeoman, Division Leading Petty Officer), Bangor, WA - Early on it was rough. The Commanding Officer was psycho. Demanding while at sea and fun, and it got alot better when the CO was changed. 1989 - 1993 Nuclear Field A School / Nuclear Power Training Command (Math & Physics Instructor, Section Advisor) - What a job! Work hard, get your paper work done, then take off and play golf or whatever else floated your boat, then back to work for a couple of hours. Great duty. Orlando, FL 1993 - 1995 USS Montpelier SSN 765 (Division Leading Petty Officer) Norfolk, VA Loved the job, the family separation is what finally got me to leave (that and the downsizing of the Navy had froze promotions). This the duty that did it in. Last year in was out to sea for 268 days. Last run was 5.5 months.
