Gwen's Story

Life Greetings Classmates, The biggest & most interesting news is that I married Roald Haaland, my Barlow high School sweetheart (Barlow Teacher Virginia Haaland's son who is 1 year older than me.) We are still happily together after 29 years! We were married in a pine forest "cathedral" after I was nearly finished with graduate school. We have a son (now 14 years old) and a daughter (now 10 years.) Roald was always a sweet sensitive respectful guy and has been a wonderful husband and Father. Our children would not exist if I had not been a student at the wonderful (but sadly defunct) Barlow School. So many great memories of camping in the old lean-to, working in the old art barn, dancing upstairs in the schoolhouse, natural history class in assoc. with the Hudson Highland museum & the best field trips. Where is Toni Vincent? I went to Marlboro College in southern Vermont in '77 with it's beautiful rolling campus redolent of the Barlow hills and forests. It was reminiscent of Barlow, with only 200 students so I felt at home there as a freshman & Roald visiting on week-ends. A couple of years later Roald attended Bennington College on a full scholarship nearby in southern Vermont. He later got his Master's degree in early childhood development at Tufts & has been a teacher for the past 21 years & has been awarded a number of grants. At the risk of boring you: I graduated with honors in biology, botany & ecology from Marlboro College in 1981. I spent my summers and winterim terms working as a Research Assistant at The Cary Arboretum of the NY Botanical Garden in Millbrook NY (not far from Barlow.) I was a visiting student at The University of Vermont in 1980, taking botany & geology classes not offered by small Marlboro College. Then took graduate courses there in '81. In 1982, I moved to Northeast Connecticut to do graduate work in Paleobotany and I never left this relatively undeveloped part of New England. I also worked as a Research Associate at the Uni...Expand for more
versity of Connecticut for many years. I earned my doctorate in paleobotany in 1990. Later the Paleobotany Dept. at UCONN was canned during the recession and my field became extinct (here in CT.) But on with a new chapter in my previously workaholic existence. Roald had tenure and we decided to start a family. I had saved up forever and we had enough for a sizable down payment on a really nice home on four acres on wooded terrain laced with stone walls and crowned with ledges that have become rock garden areas. We made a ridiculously low offer during the recession and to our everlasting surprise, the builder accepted it and signed the contract on the exact date of our wedding anniversary! It turned out that the builder was about to go bankrupt! Anyhow, I morphed into a Mom at home after the birth of our son Jamieson Houston Haaland in 1991. Blond curly-haired, freckle-faced Jamieson is a boyscout & avid hiker who now attends Rectory School. Our daughter Shannon Juliana arrived on schedule four years later just as we had hoped. Shannon has light blond straight hair, wide-set blue eyes, & a rounder face than Jamieson. She is a graceful ballerina & her intellect/ability write poems are a source of amazement for us. Roald and I have been active land stewards: volunteers for a local land conservation organization where we designed and built a small trail system that is described in a field guide and is open free to the public. I am also on the board of directors for two local Associations (land conservancy & historic preservation.). I began writing poetry a few years ago and won 5 poetry awards in the past few years. One of my poems was chosen for publication by the Dept. of Environmental Protection in an anthology of nature poems. I also started an online philatelic business selling postage stamps. It has been interesting to communicate with collectors from round the world. With kind regards & warm memories, Gwen Feldman Haaland Ashford CT 05
