Gwen's Story
Greetings and thanks for stopping by.
When I was young my parents planned that I would become a music teacher. After all, I had taken an interest in piano very early and by the time I was in school, I had a small Wurlitzer organ. Within a few years, I had a concert Wurlitzer organ and for 8th graduation I received a Kimball electric player piano. Having a piano that played piano rolls was special - having an electric one was new back then. (I think the player piano was more for my parents than yours truly.) Over time, I took 13 years of piano and organ lessons. At a very young age, I played at the McHenry Home Show in the local roller rink. Years later, I played during lunch at a restaurant in or near Antioch, IL. When I went onto college, I was so impressed by a high school teacher that I chose study outside of music. I did take a music course which I enjoyed. However, a future as a music teacher began to fade as I discovered I enjoyed other things more than playing music. Then in the mid-1970s my fiancé sat at the organ and piano in my parent¿s home -- the same two I had over the 13 years of lessons. As he began I walked to the other side of the room. It was so easy for him! How many years of lessons did he take, I asked. None, he replied. He played by ear. That sealed it... I was not going to teach music.
As you can see by my timeline, I have a varied list of ...Expand for more
positions. Property management and hospitality/tourism were the best -- along with a two and a half year position with a non-profit. I list them in the same sentence as each has a focus... service. While I have a community service resume squeezed into a full letter size page, the service I am writing of is that we give in various businesses, such as:
- customer service
- resident service
- guest service
and
- member service (to name a few).
That is where I excel. Of course, there are layers around providing the service which help the business or organization as well as the person you are serving. It all begins with a greeting and should end with the other person leaving happy or pleased when you say good-bye.
So, there you have it... a condensed version of where I was headed to what I found is probably my 'calling'. If you are in a position working with the public, I hope you are striving to provide 'excellence in service.'
Are you still reading? Well, drop me a note and say hi.
Til then..
Gwen
