Haig's Story

I have gone by "Ric Demian" for almost 30 years, but still answer to "Haig" from those who knew me as such. Born in Nicosia Cyprus, my first glimpses of the world were of an idyllic villa set on the hilly outskirts where my parents owned a villa-like estate, shaded by citrus trees. A large scar on my nose has sustained the recollection of an incident that took place before I was a year old. An early walker, I would explore our estate unattended. It must have been the first time I encountered a mirror by myself. Not yet fully distinguishing between my own and the reflected action, the reflection must have engendered competitive instincts in me, and I wound up taking it out on glass, precariously hanging on to wall. I came crashing down and flattened me -- a shattering experience. A glass splinter took a large gouge out of my nose, leaving a scar pronounced to this day. I would periodically ask my mother how I had gotten the scar, and she would rekindle my memory of this reflection of my childhood. tbc An excerpt from my first novel: "People are giddy, and most acutely during their teens. Hormonal eruptions are jarring. They can foment fantasies of climactic pleasure and nightmares of abysmal fear. Chasms follow peaks without warning. Teenagers can fill volumes with their wishes, hopes, and "can't-do-with outs". Cravings, though repetitive, take them by surprise and persist, leaving their captives helpless in setting let alone maintaining priorities. Impatience aggravates their inability to prioritize and confusion results; but confusion does not stand in the way of the drive to satisfaction, and neither does much else. The adolescent mind is a stage where icons from various media vie for center stage. Our story begins when the electronic media was gaining ascendancy in moving events and having an impact on youth. Radio, television, print and musical recordings bombarded the young populace with the impact of geniuses, their shock craft mimics, their detractors and their destroyers: Civil libertarians and the bigots who assassinated them; All time great boxing champions and the draft boards that KO'd them; Judeo-Christian gods and the German philosophers who killed them; Immortal guitar legends and the accidental overdoses that fatally poisoned them; Divine saviors and the songs of how the the devil was around when they had their moments of doubt and pain and of how the authorities crucified them, and the children who lost faith in them; Psychedelic compositions evoking visions of deep space and...Expand for more
the substances used to enhance listening to them; Popular presidents and the unsolved mysteries of the alleged conspirators who eliminated them; Unpopular presidents who declared war on poverty, but escalated another war and the constituents who turned against them; Other unpopular presidents who began peace making efforts with ideological rivals and the events that destroyed them; Fearful parents and the teachers who failed them; Guardsmen and the "4 Dead In Ohio" who were shot by them. And, the observers who witnessed all these and recorded them." An excerpt from a novel I am currently working on, which deals with relationships and issues surrounding anger, fear, friendship, love and death: "My sister Barb married a good man named Dave, and they had a son, Quentin. Barb and Dave met at retreat called "Hollyhock", which appealed to people seeking 'communion with nature'. Dave was from Calgary and husband and wife made their home in a comfortable bungalow. With nary a honeymoon they had Quentin, Dave and I got to be good friends, and we shared some common interests like hiking, sparring, rock music, and pro wrestling. When I'd visit Calgary or they'd visit Vancouver, we'd spend hours debating the best bands and watching my tapes of "Nature Boy" Ric Flair vs "Macho Man" Randy Savage. Quentin was a precocious kid, and his parents pride and joy. Dave and I would have fun wrestling with him, pretending he was beating us badly. It was obvious Dave was a loving father and that Quentin and Barb were in good hands. About 2 years ago Barb called me in distress. She told me Quentin's preschool teacher had reported that he had become violent toward her and some of the other children. Worse yet, Dave had just been diagnosed with untreatable cancer and had only a few months to live. As Dave was growing sicker he was pushing Quentin away, believing it would be easier for his son to deal with his death if he grew to not love him. When I got to Calgary, I embraced Dave and we broke into tears. I gathered the three of them and tried to play with Quentin. Quentin, as Barb predicted, was hostile, and I backed away. I got my suitcase and took out some furry likenesses of the four of us I had had made up by a toy maker, which I had intended for Christmas. I arranged them in a huddle, embracing one another, and showed them to Quentin. The child smiled, started giggling, and Dave followed suit. Dave picked Quentin up, kissed him, cried tears of joy, while Barb's eye lit up as I opened a bottle of champagne."
