Hal's Story

Life My bio, in a nut shell, and without life's dramas. I was born at Ft. Munroe, VA where my father was assigned to an Army mine planter, 5 months into WW11. I spent the next 17 years as a military dependent moving every couple of years. Starting with my teen years, I lived on Governor's Island (Fort Jay) N.Y. (1956-1959), and left Curtis H.S.(Staten Island) during October 1959 of my senior year. The choice was not mine. My father's military career had ended due to illness. It was also difficult to leave my friends, and not graduate with my class. Over the years I would often travel to New York on business, and the shuttle plane from Wash.DC would fly over Governor's Island, reminding me of my teen and high school years. I often wonder what my N.Y. friends have done over the years, and I would like to hear from them. I finished H.S. at Christopher Columbus in Boston, and graduated with a class of 90, so it was not difficult to make new friends, and know everyone. It was difficult to adjust to a life of not living on an Army base. After H.S. I was not sure what I wanted to do as a career. Several turning points directed my life. I started my education at Boston University, interested in the sciences, but left at the end of my second year. Over the next dozen plus years I tried different jobs for experience, and kept working toward my education. In looking back, work and study came before any social life. In the end I obtained a BSA, MBA, JD and later an LLM. I did not plan on going to school as long as I did, but I did not enjoy working in finance or business management; however, after working for a company that exported arms and technology, I decided I wanted a career in international business/law, and applied to law school. This decision resulted in the second turning point in my life. The first was declining Navy flight training. At the last minute and with some guilt, after going through the medical and testing, I used my 4-A classification, and avoided...Expand for more
the VNam draft. During my second year of law school I met Joan; we attended the same University. Joan had been a nun for 10 years in a French order, and had taught in Catholic schools. She was, and still is the complete opposite of me. We got married during my last year of law school. This was the third turning point in my life. Joan and I graduated the same day. I got a waiver to take the Mass. Bar Exam before I graduated, so I could beat my class in the job market. My first job was a 5 year assignment in Paris, working with NATO (fourth turning point in my life). Without Joan's French, I would have been lost for the first two years, on simple things such as a lease, bringing a car in for repairs, asking the concierge to do something, and visiting a doctor/dentist. Over the years I worked for major US and foreign companies, including Deutsche Telekom, and France Telecom, establishing companies in over 50 countries, participating as a board member, and managing legal and regulatory matters for Russia, CIS, Europe, Asia and the Americas. This gave my family the opportunity to live in several countries, and experience different cultures. I have two sons (the best turning points in my life), in N.Y. and DC. One is Chief Technical Officer of Advance Technology for a NY based company, and just earned a graduate degree; the other son left law school, and is deciding on a career path, before returning to graduate school. As for my life, I would not change anything. It has not been perfect, but nothing is. Currently I consider myself retired, although I have not retired. I work, on and off, an currently took on a legal assignment for about a year in Arlington Va. With less years ahead, than behind me,I left Potomac MD for a life style change and moved to Ft. Myers, where we have family and friends. This is not my last stop; as the Russians say, "I AM DELIGHTED TO HAVE MORE TIME FOR LIFE ITSELF," and I hope you have found the time for life. Best regards to all!
