Harper G's Story
Updated August 12, 2009
For the first time in twenty+ years I have no dog(s), but I have an ex-male cat, Midnight (all black except for a white spot on his chest) who wandered up to the front door as a kitten in 1999 (guess he knew a "softie" when he saw one).
I'm retired - spend much of my time with my grandsons, communicating with old friends and family, doing genealogy, reading, writing (a novel?), and making messes (according to the family).
After Robins, Lincoln, and Stonewall, I went to WVU where I earned a BS in Economics and spent a year in Law School and another in Journalism School. I learned a bit about programming computers, and met then married Jeanne Arbogast, who was born in Hundred, Wetzel County. We met when she was a staff member and I was a student worker in the WVU Medical Center Library. She was my boss, and still thinks she is.
I got a computer programming job and was soon drafted (this was during Vietnam). I joined the Navy and spent two years each as a programmer at PAMI CONUS (Bainbridge, MD) and BuPERS (Arlington, VA). Our children, Geoffrey and Sarah, were born while I was in the Navy. Both are intelligent, motivated, hard-working, and have PhD degrees.
After the Navy, I worked as an analyst and programmer at the Center for Naval Analyses (Arlington), and then as a so...Expand for more
ftware development team leader for the Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (Washington, DC).
We returned to West Virginia in 1978, where I led the programming staff for a consulting company, TNI, Inc., in Charleston.
We moved to WVNET in Morgantown in 1980, where I was variously a programmer/analyst, team leader, consultant... . I took early retirement in 2002 (and am now bored). Jeanne was not happy about my retirement as she continued working as a faculty member at WVU. She retired as Assistant Director of the Center for Excellence for Disabilities on July 31, 2009.
Geoffrey has a PhD in Counseling Psychology from WVU and works at a prison. He has two young sons. Sarah has a PhD in Immunology from the University of Rochester, worked for Wyeth, and now works for IDEC in LaJolla, CA. She has two daughters.
I have coached some youth basketball, run some leagues and tournaments. Right now I have a cat (or, it has me).
My father lived with us for three years and passed away March 1, 2004 at 96-1/2. Mother had Alzheimer's Disease (or something like it) and passed away on July 22, 2003.
A current project is helping compile a database of all member of our high school class. See the group on Facebook (type "Stonewall 1962" in the search box). Eventually there may be a web page.
