Harriet's Story
Life
Married to Eugene F. McCarthy 20 years. Stepmom to 4 great (grown-up kids), adoptive mom to 3 special needs Russian boys ages 21, 17, and 16. Grandmother to three little girls and one boy. Currently teaching learning disabled children and doing research on the effects of institutionalism on adopted Eastern European children. Published writer of non-fiction narrative work and currently running a large longitudinal study of previously institutionalized children and the parents who adopt them. Currently head of world's largest adoption on-line support and intervention website for parents of post-institutionalized children from Eastern Europe. Presented with the 2003 Congressional "Angels in Adoption" award for North Carolina. Obsessive learner. Went back to college in 1998, graduated in 2001 with an English Literature degree. Hobbies are dog training, gardening, reading. Constantly in the search to expand my brain!
School
Ancient history, but preferred public school to private. Met some great people at Washington Hi...Expand for more

College
VERY late in life went back to college at Salem College in Winston-Salem, NC. Salem is the oldest woman's college in the Southern United States. It's located in an historically accurate village which still functions today. The campus is indescribably wonderful and full of old-world charm. It's a small school where students can dialogue with professors on a scholastic and personal basis. I loved going to Salem. If I ever need my Masters, I'll go there to get it.
Workplace
Oh, dear. Too long to even attempt, but have previously taught dyslexic children. I'm also heavily involved with the support lists I manage on the Internet for parents who are struggling with the "everyday" issues of previously adopted children. In 2005, I became a Master Gardener, so I'm very involved with our local Agriculture Center where I do about 4-5 hours of volunteer work a week - either at the Ag Center or at our local Arboretum. I find my greatest pleasure in the garden.
