Harriette's Story
High School
I moved to San Jose the last couple of months of my freshman year. It was quite a shock as I had been a big 9th grader in junior high in Richmond CA. After a summer adjusting to the fact that there was actually a sun during the summer (Richmond was never above 70) and making some friends, I began to like high school. I was mostly studious, but did have a couple of roles in school plays (Glass Menagerie and Our Town) and was a member of the drama club, marching band and the choir. I've become a lot more outgoing since then.
Life Since Then
Married twice, had two sons. Finally figured out that I wasn't very good at being married and have been single (and happy) for a very long time. Went to college off and on for 20 years, had a great time, and finally graduated in 1978. During those years, I also worked for the City of San Jose and Santa Clara County. Then I became what my mother called a Hippie and moved to the Sierras for a while. When I came back to San Jose, I went to work as a database specialist, a software analyst, and then a technical writer/video producer. I did that about 20 years.
Although I enjoyed writing, I retired early from my job as a technical writer because I wanted time to pursue my other interests, writing and genealogy. Then I went on a 15-month road trip around the US with my dog, Morris, researching and visiting cousins. Had a great time! Currently, I am hard at work updating my web site (hoisington-horsington dot com), my Facebook page .facebook dot com/harriette.jensen) and ...Expand for more
my blog /plainpossum dot wordpress dot com/), creating a permaculture food forest in my backyard and, once again, taking classes at the local college. I took a Kuder Personal Preference Test in Mr. Tomashek's senior problems class that told me I should be either a forest ranger, farmer, preacher or teacher and I have done all of the above in some strange form or another <g>. Right now, I'm an urban farmer and a part-time poet.
In 2007, I became a grandmother for the first time. My youngest son, Ian, and his wife, Christine Shiu, had what has become the love of my life, my granddaughter Alise Shiu Jensen, who I am teaching how to cultivate a garden and a passion for family history.
UPDATE: My granddaughter is now 11 and a budding soccer and mountain biking star (see photos, following the lead her mom and dad have shown) as well as beautiful, creative and very almost-teen.
2019 - Back in school once again. This time at Berkeley City College in their creative writing program. The horoscope I did for myself years ago said I would be a late bloomer. At 79, I'm nothing if not late. I am now writing a novel in addition to the poetry that I have been writing off and on since college. One of the poems I wrote recently has been accept for publication in December. The novel.....Who knows? I may be the next Grandma Moses.
I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me from James Lick (jensenharriette at gmail dot com). I'm still doing genealogy, spending too much time on the internet, writing, and my garden overfloweth.
