Harrison's Story

Life Life, in general, is very good and exciting. The military, education, work, family and all the people I've met along the way have all been fun and interesting to associate with. I've learned a lot about their personal situations as well as tradition, culture, hobbies, interest and etc. I personally believe that is why we were put here to experience all that, enjoy it, gain wisdom from it and in the end to give back and teach, which is why we Natives value and respect our elders. School During my high school years I was pretty low key. I didn't do anything notorious except ditch a lot of classes. I did enjoy traveling to rodeos with my cowboy friends, but this hobby lasted until I went back to college. I now have a lot of respect for atheletes who can maintain their GPA and still compete. College I didn't think I was capable of sitting in class for 6 to 7 hours a day then off to the library for another 4 to 6 hrs. It's amazing that I didn't develop good study habits in high school, but I learned the hard way in college. My undergraduate (engineering) seemed very hard, but after a few years of working and raising a family I began to enjoy learning. I liked it so much that I went back for a masters degree. Workplace I started working as an engineer for the Navajo Nation with a contract under the Office of Surface Mining. A year later I left for better opportunity outs...Expand for more
ide the government only to work myself out of a job after 16 years, but I think I needed the change. Hence, I semi-retired for 1.5 years and lost much of my savings as a day trader so I decided to go back to work. The pipeline was a very good job because of it's remote location on Black Mesa, but close enough to civilization. I had to leave again because of the Mojave Generating Station shutting down. I moved on from Dallas, TX where I worked at the corporate office of North American Coal Corporation since January of 2005. Dallas is definitely not what I expected, but it has changed my way of thinking. I resided in Vancouver, British Columbia for a year, but I am now on a Flyin/Flyout (FIFO) status to Chetwynd, BC. Since I was out for 7 days I decided to terminate my lease in Vancouver so I am now temporarily living in Flagstaff with my family. We have decided to stay in Flagstaff and eventually buy another house locally. Military I didn't think I was cut out for college so I joined the Air Force instead. I've met many people and made lots of friends in the military along the way. If I had to do it over again I'd serve my country again in a heart beat, but I would do it different. The GI Bill helped me get my first degree and a better outlook on life. If it wasn't for the military I think I would have ended up back on the rez without an education, experience and a job.
