Harry's Story
Life
Where do I start? Well, at the beginning is always a good place.
I was born in Pittsburgh, PA. My family moved to Kingston, NY when I was 8 years old. I attended many schools in the Kingston, Saugerties, Woodstock area.
I became an Auto Mechanic after high school, I thought of nothing but cars and girls at that age. I was married at 18 in 1976, my first son was born in 1980. That marriage ended in 1989, 2 years after moving to Washington state. I have lived in Washington ever since but I have always longed for my home in Saugerties, the High Woods area.
My second son was born in 1991. He lives with his mother. My oldest son, Harry JR., just got married a few months ago and just recently I was informed that I would have a new title in 8 months, GRANDPA! Getting old is , well, interesting.
Things are looking bright for the future and I find it nice to be able to say that. My primary hobby is, what else, computers. I work full time and have my own internet business at ovcbs.com.
I hope that all of my old friends are doing well. Please contact me if you remember me, good or bad. Much time has past since our youth and much has changed and it would be good to talk.
School
My family moved around allot in the Kingston, Saugerties, Woodstock area so I changed schools frequently - not a good thing for a kid. I quit high school in the 10th grade because I was sure I wanted to be an auto mechanic and I thought school was holding me back. I got my GED shorty after quitting. If I had it to do all over I would not have left high school.
After 8 years as a mechanic I found school again and have never been far from it since. I have even taught a few classes in digital electronics, computer programming and graphic design. I own my own business now and one of my upcoming projects will be teaching night classes on computer use.
College
College, school that I love.
I returned to school in 1983 after an 8 year venture into the automotive field working at H. Houst & Son in Woodstock, NY. I realized that as an auto mechanic without formal training that I could not go much further in career advancement.
Then it happened! I went to my friends house one day and they were playing around with a Texas Instruments TI99-4a, one of the first readily available home computers. I was hooked! I enrolled at SUNY New Paltz in the Computer Scienc...Expand for more
e curriculum. I could not get enough!
After SUNY I worked various computer jobs on the software, programming, side of the industry. That was not enough.
After moving to Washington state and finding computer programming jobs scarce in the smaller towns near my home I decided to broaden my possibilities. I went back to school at a Community college and earned an Associates degree in Computer Service Technology. I stayed on at school after that to pursue a further interest in digital electronics.
I got a chance to assist at the college as a teachers assistant and as an Instructor in Beginning Digital Electronic classes.
I still love teaching. There is nothing like the feeling when you see "the light come on" in a students eyes when you have helped them successfully understand a topic.
Altho I don't attend any schools now I am constantly researching to keep my knowledge in the computer field current. I enjoy teaching others about computers and I have been approached about teaching at a local community college several times. Maybe....
Workplace
At 16 I knew exactly what I wanted, cars! I became an auto mechanic then service manager at H. Houst & Son in Woodstock. That lasted 8 years. At that young age you think you know everything which you surely do not!
While attending SUNY New Paltz I worked various jobs to support my family. Some of these were a programming position at IBM in Poughkeepsie, a computer operator position for BOCES in New Paltz and even a couple of factory jobs and a bookkeeping position to keep the cash flowing.
After moving to Washington state in 1987 I was employed as a computer programmer with a now defunct company that wrote medical billing software. The Internet put an end to that and made a start for a new direction for me.
I know own my own company which is currently undergoing restructuring for management, financial and tax purposes. When the online portion is up and running it will be at ovcbs dot com (Okanogan Valley Computer Based Services). The company is now on a local scale and we handle everything computer related from computer sales and service to custom programming, web site design, web site hosting, networking, training, and soon we will be adding high-speed fiber optic access for the local community.
I'm getting too old for this stuff! Whew! This is why I am taking on partners - delegate is my new motto.
