Harry J's Story
After BKHS I attended Millersville State College and met my wife Susan on the 3rd day on campus. We married in 69 and had 2 children Laura in 75 and Peter in 78. I taught high school biology for the next 30 years getting a Masters at West Chester & another Masters at Rosemont. When I retired in 01, I was invited to return to Delaware County Community College, where I had been teaching night classes while the kids were in college, to be an adjunct professor. I am still working there (2013) and enjoying each day. I mostly teach Intro to Bio for majors, a biochemical, cellular & molecular course. And the story continues. Susan was diagnosed w/ MS in 1986. Shew has secondary progressive MS which means a long slow slide downward. In 05 she just couldn't get through a full day of elem. librarian and was having real problems w/ her vision. So after 28 years of teaching she took disability. In 2013, After having the house on the market for almost 11 months, we finally got an offer from 2 young Doctors, w/ 2 conditions. 1) had to sign agreement of sale by noon the next day, before we had a scheduled open house and 2) had to move in 3 weeks. Good news is they met our asking price. On Monday give my final exam and on Tues started packing every day for the next 3 weeks. We moved to Granite Farms Estate, a retirement community, near...Expand for more
Media, PA, on 6/4/13. Have been here for 8 weeks and have unpacked almost everything. Still have a few pictures for grand kids to hang but we r moved. Still doesn'tt really feel like home but after 28 years at Charles Dr., it will take a while. Best news is NO STAIRS!!!. I no longer worry about Susan falling down stairs when Iâm not at home. We have gotten VERY used to going to dinner and reading a menu and having choices, PLUS no clean-up nor shopping. U can get very spoiled very quickly. It is like living in a hotel or on a cruise ship. In May, Susan took and failed the balance and walking test for Medicare and is now eligible for a power wheelchair. She cannot walk 1/3 of the way from our apartment to the dining room. We have been told that it takes from 6 weeks to 20 weeks to process the paperwork & do some check-ups. So far no chair or any problems so we continue to wait, while I push Susan to meals in her wheelchair so I am very into hearing good news from Medicare. Laura w/ the 3 granddaughters come for dinner almost every week and the little girls are a big hit in the dining room w/ old the older folks. we are the youngest by far. Average age is almost 80. If U every get out this way stop in. Would love to see U, catch up, and compare pics.
I am hoping to reconnect with old friends and former students.
