Harry's Story

Green River Lake continues to produce big muskies
Harry Prestanski is another one of those muskie fanatics who has learned you don't have to travel to Minnesota or Canada to catch monster fish. He again proved you can catch the monsters right here at Green River Lake.
Fishing with guide Gregg Thomas, Prestanski caught and released four legal muskies while fishing at Green River Lake on Feb. 27 and 28. The largest was a 49.5-inch long monster. It had a girth of 23.5 inches.
He caught the big fish on a 5 1/2-inch orange and yellow Wiley crank bait. It took him 15 minutes to land the fish.
"It put up a great fight coming completely out of the water at one time. It also made several good runs, taking out plenty of line as I was using a light drag," said Prestanski, who lives in Cincinnati.
He said he has fished many times for muskies in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ohio and Canada. This was the second time he muskie fished in Kentucky.
"I fished with Gregg in December during a blizzard on Cave Run. We are hard core fishing enthusiasts," he explained. "Kentucky is a great fishing state, but still does not have the recognition it deserves. Gregg is a great fishing guide. ishing. We caught and released seven legal size muskies in one day, two over 40 inches."
"We had a blast," said Thomas, who guides on Green River Lake in March and April and then spends most of May and June fishing Cave Run before heading north to guide at Lake Mille Lacs, Minn., the remainder of the summer.
The young guide calls Morehead home and was in the processing of finishing a degree at Eastern Kentucky University until the muskie business became so good and demanding. He has temporarily put it on hold.
"I've been keeping really busy," said Thomas, who makes the Lucky Vista Motel his home when working Green River Lake. "I just had to put the degree on the back burner for a while."
Pointing out the attractiveness of Green River Lake for muskie hunters, Thomas says most of his customers come from outside Kentucky with many driving from Chicago and Indianapolis.
Besides fishing Cave Run and Green River for muskies, Prestanski also fishes Kentucky lakes for walleye and bass. "This was the first time I fished at Green River, but it won't be the last," added the former PR director for Winnebago recreational vehicles. "We already are planning another trip for later in the year."
