HARRY's Story
Written on January 24, 2015
My parents moved from Arkansas to Tucson in 1954 where my mother worked as an elementary school teacher for TUSD and my father worked as a purchasing agent for Davis-Monthan AFB. Both passed away about 7 years ago - just a couple of weeks apart. They had been married for 62 years. I no longer have any connection with Tucson - just memories.
I attended Blenman Elementary School, Doolen Junior High School, and Catalina High School. I also attended the University of Arizona, Arizona State College, Northern Arizona University, University of Miami (Florida), and graduated from Texas A&M University with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1969. Afterwards, I enrolled in a graduate degree program at the Colorado State University.
While living in Tucson, I was a member of the Catalina Methodist Church and the Order of DeMolay (a youth organization sponsored by the "Masonic Lodge") with Alan Bonney (CHS '65), John Dyer (CHS '65), and Claude Sneed (CHS '65). I was also a Scout in the Boy Scouts of America.
In 1970, I was selected to serve in the U.S. Peace Corps in the "República de Colombia" in South America. Instead, I moved to Canada. I've been here for 45 years. I am a peaceful, polite, and gentle person; Canada is also a peaceful, polite, and gentle country.
I have two middle aged sons - one of which now lives in Austin, Texas - and the other lives in Canada.
I still own property in Arkansas and Louisiana, but nothing anymore in Tucson.
I am retired from the position of Human Resource Manager for the Judiciary, Criminal Justice, Court Services, and Corrections Branches (Correctional Officers, Probation Officers, Deputy Sheriffs) of the Department of Justice for the Government of the State of British Columbia located in the City of Prince George. I was employed there from 1985. Due to reorganization of government se...Expand for more
rvices in the early 1990's, I was given additional responsibilities with the Department for Children and Families (Child Protection Officers). Prior to my Public Service, I held the position of Industrial Relations Supervisor for Canadian Forest Products (Canfor) located in Prince George where I was employed from 1974 to 1985. Prior to that, I held the position of Assistant Store Manager for Eaton's, a Canadian department store which is now owned and operated by Sears Canada, in both Vernon and Vancouver, where I was employed from 1971 to 1974. As a result, I possess more than 40 years of Professional Human Resource Management experience. I have also been a member of the British Columbia Human Resource Management Association and Rotary International.
I now collect four life-time pensions:
#1) Government of the Province of British Columbia - Public Service
#2) Government of Canada - Canada Pension Plan
#3) Government of Canada - Old Age Security
#4) Government of the United States of America - Social Security
During the summer of 1969, I was employed by the Tucson Parks and Recreation Department and worked in the head office with Director Gene Reid (Reid Park/Randolph Park).
During the summer of 1968, I was employed by the Miami, Florida Parks and Recreation Department.
In recent years, I have become the proud sponsor of the Grupo Folklorico Cotzal de Acuña located in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila de Zaragoza, México. Traditional folk dance in Mexico (ballet folklórico) is still very popular in Mexico and is a beautiful expression of joy and entertainment.
I had my DNA tested by Gene by Gene, Ltd. of Houston, Texas. My Haplogroup is I-M253 which occurs at greatest frequency in Sweden and Finland. It originated between 4,000 - 5,000 years ago in Denmark. My "Most Distant Confirmed Ancestor" is Johannes Otterbach (1622-1696) of Württemberg, Germany.
