Heather's Story
Military
How do I even begin to elaborate on my nearly 10-years of military service. I guess at the beginning....
I left for Air Force basic training on 31 December 1996, only a few short months after high school graduation. After 6 weeks at Lackland AFB, TX, I then went on to Keesler AFB, MS for techincal training as an Information Manager..later I would come to find out how ridiculous the whole fact of "training" for this job was. After my training was complete, I was back to good 'ol Belleville....Scott AFB, IL was my first duty station.
At Scott I worked as the Administrative support for the 375th Security Forces Squadron. This job was the best so far in my career. The dudes I worked with were great, my commander was the best and it was an all around good time.
After spending 2 years at Scott AFB, I was reassigned to Kadena AB, Okinawa, Japan. Here I held many jobs. LOL I was too busy having a good time (and boy did I) to really concentrate on my career. A fault that later I would regret.
After 3 years of partying it up on a tropical island equiped with hot dudes, cold beers and excellent diving, I was off to Cannon AFB, NM; where I am currently stationed.
Cannon is a great assignment and I've made many life-long friends here. I'v done a 6-month tour in Saudi Arabia and a 4-month tour in...Expand for more
Iraq. I've got some time, so let's talk about Iraq.
Balad AB, Iraq. Wow! If anyone ever tells you that women don't go to the frontlines of combat, spit in thier eye! I was right there....and terribly afraid. Never had I ever been so close to people dying! I volunteered while there at the Combat Aeromedical Staging Facility and was pervy to all the horrible things of war. But, ya know what, it made me feel better about being over there to help out the folks that had lost limbs in protecting everything that I hold dear. I came back from that place a changed person. I still have nightmares about the night that one of our tents was mortared and one of our Airmen died. That tent was only 3 down from mine. It could have easily been me. It took me a long time to get over that thought, a long time to forgive myself for coming back unharmed while so many other lost limbs, thier sight, or worse, thier lives.
But, now I'm medically retired with PTSD and trying to build a civilian life. Which is rough when all you've known is the military.
Anyway, that's all I have to say about that.
The latest? Well, I start school in January to be a Respiratory Therapist....it will be a 2 year program, so it won't take me that long. Other than that, everything's the same. Still alive, so that's always good. PEACE!
