Heather's Story

Life After graduation, I immediately began college at BPCC and Northwestern majoring in biology. Without taking some sort of break, I went through the "burn-out" phase and decided to join the Air Force in 1996. At 19, I married my "first love", but am divorcing after being together for 10 years. I do not have any kids at the moment. I worked as a medical technician in the Air Force and was only stationed at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL. The world is what I wanted to see, but I have only seen the desert...twice. My job has taken me to Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates. So, I decided to take advantage of the free education. I am attending nursing school full time and will graduate Dec 2004. The Tampa Bay area has been home since 1996. Who knows where my next adventure will be??? March 2006: I made the big move from Florida to Maine in Jan 2005 and definately experienced a "culture shock" when moving from a big city to a small town. Three months into my stay, I re-attempted skiing after a20 year lapse and fractured my knee. OUCH!! The best thing that has happened so far is the meeting of my current boyfriend and new nephews/nieces. January 2010: I got married in June 2010 to my husband, Tarek, after 5 years of dating. He is my best friend! Hopefully, this coming year will bring an addition to the family. Lastly, Tarek and I finally bought our first house in Oct 2009. School Being a child of military parents, I have had to pick up and move many times. With this, I have attended many schools and have met many new people. I have attended schools in Germany, Maine, New York, and graduated in Louisiana. My best memory from school was in 1988, being one of the few 7th graders swimming on the varsity team at AuSable Valley Central School. I almost made it to state, missing a spot on the team by one place. At the time, AuSable was comprised of 6th-12th grade and did not have a JV team. I earned the school letter and considered it a big accomplishment for a 12 year old. I then moved to Louisiana where I met my best friend, Dow Forrest, who I still talk to today and who now lives in the Tampa area. Studying in high school was my biggest priority, but I wish I participated in more school related activities. College Being in the military has been a great experince for me. Unfortunately, with trip's overseas and moving, I have attended numerous colleges. Now, I ...Expand for more
am settled in Florida and excited to finally be graduating with my college degree in nursing in Dec 2004. It has only taken me 10 years to finish...Ha! Ha! All I can say is, "It is about time." March 2006: I did graduate with my nursing degree from St. Petersburg College in Dec 2004. Now, I am working towards my bachelor's degree in nursing as a distance learner from Maine. My new graduation date is May 2007. January 2010: Yeah!!! I became the first in my family to graduate with a degree...not one degree, but two. In May 2007, I graduated with my Bachelors in Nursing degree. Not sure if I am going to pursue my master's. Think I will enjoy life right now. Workplace I currenlty work as a nurse at Maine General Medical Center on an acute medical-surgical unit. Military I joined the military in April 1996 and was sent to Lackland AFB in San Antonio, Texas on May 1, 1996. I endured six weeks of basic military training learning custom/courtisies, military history, discipline, etc.. Our flight never achieved Honor Flight like we had hoped. I will never forget experiencing the confidence course, the gas chamber and shooting my first gun ever, the M-16. After graduation in June, I was assigned to Sheppard AFB, Texas where I began the first part of a five month training program to learn my job as a medical technician. It was fun meeting new people, spending time with my ex-husband and touring San Antonio. In August, I made my way to Offutt AFB, Nebraska to complete phase two. This was my on the job training phase for the next two months and probably the most boring. I was literally out in the middle of nowhere, away from all of civilization, without transportation to go anywhere. Gradation took place in November 1996 and I was on my way to work in the "real" Air Force at MacDill AFB, Florida. December 1996 marked the first time working in a real job on my own. During my time at MacDill, I was part of the Honor's and Ceremonies Team and assisted in a search and recovery of an F-16 that crashed. I have many good memories and many bad memories but will definately miss this place when I leave in December 2004. March 2006: I completed my military contract after serving 8 1/2 years in the Air Force and got out Nov 2004. The military was as eye opener and a great experience I will never foget. MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, Florida marked my only permanent duty station.
