Heather's Story

I remember in the 3rd grade I believe it was - at our Lady Queen of Peace elementary school - me making homemade valentines for people - and one bunny for a certain person. I also remember having my first boy crush in the third grade - I bought him a hamster....I think for his birthday from the mall right next to the school.....or maybe I was trying to impress him.....that is until I was chased around the playground - I think he was trying to steal a kiss. I've been to soo many schools it's hard to place the exact year on each school. So really, I would be very surprised if anyone could remember me. That is except for when I got into high school - I think a lot of people would remember me there. I do know from all the various schools I've been too - that going to a school in a big city is a pretty rough time not only for students but teachers just the same. I recall in the 7th or 8th grade at Audubon middle school a new teacher coming into the classroom - I don't think he survived an hour - he walked out and never came back. I also remember the torment I got because of having to receive free lunches - I dwelt with that by deciding to just stop eating my lunch so that the kids could not torment me any longer about it. f the times didn¿t even eat breakfast - you get sick and tired of rice mixed with sugar........if there was any sugar or even butter to use. Our neighbors know us as the kids that borrowed food. my mother was a single parent - never getting assistance from any government - and never recieved child support - and did as well as she could - and actually is above the waitress pay scale now - she did complete school and college successfully by the time we grew up. All I can say - is teach your kids to not be judgmental - and to be sensitive towards others - teach them to help not harm there fellow students. Life is tough enough on the poor to have to eat rice and what food they can scrounge up from there bare cabinet. [My cabinets are never bare now :) ] - I teach my kids to be kind to everyone - I teach them to be colorblind - sensitive to others feelings - and to lend a hand even when not asked - I also teach them to hold there head high - be proud no matter -what mountain they have to climb over because it usually ends up being nothing but a grain of sand and that there is always someone somewhere dealing with a much tougher situation. I teach them that if they really want to achive something - just to believe it and they will.
