Heather's Story
(The picture above is about 8 years old now).
After graduating from Kennewick High, I continued on to CBC to get my Legal Secretary Degree. I had originally wanted to go into Accounting in high school, but changed that as soon as I got into college.
My favorite thing first thing in the morning was the cream cheese muffins from the cafeteria. I joined the Sci-Fi Club and had lots of fun. We would spend our breaks and lunches in the HUB playing games. My twin sister and I decided to do the tallent show the first year. We sang two Ricky Nelson songs - "Have I told you lately that I love you" and "That's All She Wrote". Those that knew us from high school were surprised that we would even do that since we were so quiet in high school. The Sci-Fi Club got up and performed the Time Warp from the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I got to attend Sci-Fi conventions in Seattle.
I was married in 1991 to my high school sweetheart who I had dated since 1986. He went into the Air Force and we were stationed at Incirlik AB, Turkey for 1 1/2 years. I got there July of 1991 just after Desert Storm. I had wanted to continue on with my Paralegal Degree. They had a branch of the University of Maryland on the base, but it didn't offer many of the classes that I needed. I took Archeaology instead :). That was a fun class and I got to do a little traveling too.
He opted for an early out when they were allowing it and we returned to the USA in December of 1992.
We didn't have any children and were divorced in 1998. I have two cats left: Panther (15 years old) and Loki (8 Years old). Spitfire and Silver passed away earlier this year.
I met a wonderful guy in 2000. We were friends for about a year and a half when he decided that we needed to take that next step. He's pictured in my photo album with me. He ended that relationship a couple of months ago which has still left me dazed and confused. He will always hold a special place in my heart. The memories I wouldn't trade for anything.
I went back to CBC in the spring of 2004 and graduated with my Paralegal degree in June 2006. Since I had waived the math courses the first time around 15 years prior, they decided to give me an assessment test to see if I could get into the recommended math class for the degree. I was so nervous. They gave us a study book to use for a week or two before the test. I looked through the book and nearly dropped on the floor. Did I really know this stuff at one time? I found a tutorial on the internet and practiced for weeks. It started to come back to me. I passed the test and was able to get into the class I needed. I completed in June, 2006 with a 3.59 GPA in Paralegal. They did not...Expand for more
allow me to graduate or walk with honors because they averaged in the 3.23 I received nearly 20 years ago to drop me to a 3.41 GPA. I know I made it. I worked really hard. I don't agree with their doing that. What if you took something totally different before? I'm sorry, you can't graduate with honors for this program because you received a D in welding 20 years ago. That wasn't my case, but I feel for others who may have experienced the same thing.
I took the National Paralegel Test on December 1st - 2nd, 2006. It's aquivalent of a bar exam for attorneys in some ways. My current degree will allow me to work in Washington State, but the National certificate would allow me more opportunities to go to other states if I need to. I missed passing the test by 15 points in one section the first time, but retook that section in March. I passed the test and got my certification on May 8, 2007. Now, I have to continue with 50 credits every 5 years in order to keep the certification. :)
I joined a writer's group about four years with a local friend who is an author. I finished my first book last year and have started the second in the series. I'm currenly undergoing revisions then will be trying to get the first one published.
I have been trying to attend the local Sci-Fi Convention (Radcon) every year. I wasn't able to make it last year as my sister's husband was dieing and I had to take her to Seattle to be with him. But, you should see me there as my Elf again this year, like the ones from Lord of the Rings. I started attending those when they first began nearly 20 years ago.
I started doing Karaoke a few years ago. It's helped in my ability to speak in front of people. I figure if you can sing in front of a bunch of strangers, it will be easier to speak in front of them.
I have been a member of the Lakeside Gem & Mineral Club for the last 4 years. I have been learning how to make my own rock cabechons this past year. Recently, I took classes in intarsia (designs made with several pieces of rocks), silversmithing (making my own settings), and wire wrapping. I'm enjoying all of it.
Workplace
I am currently working for Broadmoor RV as the Warranty Manager. I have been there since 1988 and have been doing this type of work since 1993. I came into it by accident, but have enjoyed the work and the knowledge that I've received. I've checked in this area, but there aren't that many paralegal positions open here and those that are pay less than my current income. I don't plan on moving out of the area any time soon.
