Heather's Story
I always wanted to be a medical doctor: specifically a pediatrician when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a an impossible task even though I hadn't finish high school.
Therefore it would seam I picked an impossible dream.
As it turns out, they were both right and wrong. My health returned!
Meanwhile, for school, I spent most of my time in the library helping out people with research. BUT, I completed grade 10.
Then along came grade 11. Talk about nightmares...
I hated typing class- and advised to drop secretarial classes - I would have made a Poor, Clerical person- Still loath balancing my books.
Then came Home Ec. Was OK, despite -oh my- MEMORY flash backs.
Anyone remember the teacher with large-ish teeth and 40 foot freeze look. I sware, if I ever saw metered corners again I'd puke. [Know something funny. I found my pot holder, yup with the metered corners!]
Someone suggested Teaching!! OOPS, NO Teaching Certificate AND NO UNIVERSITY!
My options were very limited. They (the system), enrolled me b/c Grade10 GPA. Whew so you'd think: Wait a minute don't Teacher's need to learn more math. Ahem, that's MATHEMATICS to you. So my hubby tells me.
Memory flash back!!
ICH I had Sergent Major for math 2 yrs running. Boy he got riled: everyone was identified by a grade and seat number.
I transferred into Mr C's class. He took time to make math something real in my goal of working in health care! HUM how does the order of brackets go again??? AS a nurse you do need to know math, how much medicine is too much or too little.
My options were lessening by the moment.
Nursing.. Had to finish grade 12. NO registered nurse RN; but, the LPN's. That programme's required minimum grade 10.
Memory flash back:
Yeah! OR not so yeah. The 'Hats best left, following their dreams. Some married, had littles or knee biters - the 2 yr old who thinks the world belongs to them NOW!! With ketchup please.
The boys, and the IN crowd!
Me, a tomboy, still sits on the outside looking and wondering so many things!
Memory flash back:
Often I was the brunt of pranks. like being stood up!! Or I'd turn up as directed and oh yeah, he had a date, just not with me.
These pranks, stung, inside it strengthened me, make my dream come true. I am a winner. I deser...Expand for more
ved better.
I achieved the 3rd highest provincial marks, for ALL the 1970 graduating LPN classes.
My GPA was 9/9.
Still I kept reading MD books, Nursing books, everything I could borrow or buy! The books went everywhere, we were insuperable. I worked permanent nights in a neo-natal unit. When there was such a shortage of RN's; the CNA's OR RPN's OR LPN's stepped up our training. Took the extra classes and became in charge of some of the NICU's.
I challenged courses at Mt. Royal College for adult entrance to their RN program. I worked, studied, And PASSED with a GPA 3.95/4. Could have repeated the course for an A+ but decided I'd rather work to pay off student loans & my parents. Times were tough. Money didn't flow like the "milk & honey" we'd all been promised. But I still had my NICU & worked now as an RN.
Moved to Vancouver at the height of their labour unrest. Nursing Managers were turning in their resignations by the handful. They were justifiable in their beef with Sr. Management. NICU's are not places you want to run with 1/2 Team Leader staff. I worked in various NICU's around BC & AB. I still kept reading & working days and some nights.
Does anyone know where they were or what was happening in 1980? I do!
"At 8:32 Sunday morning, May 18, 1980, Mount St. Helens erupted. Shaken by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale,"
I was gavage feeding a small premi his hourly 5 mls. donated breast milk! I felt the room tilt, I felt the incubator move, & I was holding a babe who weighed less than 500 grams (about a pound of butter).
Well we went for a walk; (precisely, I followed the incubator) as the whole room shook. IV tubings swinging in the air, oxygen monitors ringing off as the room rocked.!
One of the senior nurses thought it was just one of the many earthquakes that go on in Vancouver!! Even the usual traffic halted for this ONE!
I called over to the other staff, that NOPE! this was Mt. St. Helens' finally blowing it's top off.!
I decided I needed more education. Vancouver is a great place to live in, and all the rest, I just have itchy feet for learning.
I owe my higher education to the development of desktop computers!!
So I'll leave off my story for now, and if I get further requests.. I will respond.
