Heather's Story

Life Let's see what I can say about my life. :) After high school I went to HCC for about 2.5 years, I switched my major a couple times but mostly took music classes even though I never majored in music. Go figure. Since I was SERIOUSLY lacking direction I eventually quit. Before quitting though, I became involved in the schools Campus Crusade for Christ ministry which eventually led me to becoming involved at Central Community Church in Wichita. I became involved in the college aged singles group there, and started dating a guy in the group. ;) I moved here to Wichita in November of '01, and in December I had surgery to have another shunt put in, in February '02 I got married. In August of '02 I got married! :) So it's been just over three years, and we are so happy. It's such a blessing to spend each day with my best friend! I went back to school in the summer of 03 after discovering sign language and the field of interpreting, and became a sign language interpreter, which I LOVE. My husband and I live here in Wichita, with our "girls"; our dog; Brownie, and our cat; Lucy. Chris, my husband, grew up in Colorado, but moved here for college, he graduated from Friends University with a degree in Computer information systems and a minor in math. And he works at a computer consulting firm, doing computer stuff. :) We were married at Central Community Church on August 24th, 2002. I think a lot about everyone from high school and would LOVE to hear where everyone is and what you are all up to! Message me!! Take care! Heather Workplace My work history- what fun. :) I started my first job when I was 17 working as a dietary aide at the Good Samaritan Village in Hutchinson (Where my mom has worked for 26 yrs!!). I worked there for four years, but after awhile I took a 2nd job as a Guest Service Associate at Hastings, I eventually left the nursing home and became a Guest Service Manager at Hastings. Things had gotten nasty at the nursing home. After about 2 years at Hastings I quit because I was moving to Wichita. I moved in with a friend of mine and I got a job at Perfect Peace Christian Lifestyle store- a Christian book/movie/stuff store and coffeeshop. I THOUGHT it sounded like the...Expand for more
perfect job- working with Christians, having Sundays off, etc. Unfortunately, it wasn't that way at all. I did work with "christians" and I did have Sundays off, but the management was pretty awful towards all the employees but the few chosen ones. Plus, I ended up having surgery to have another shunt put in during that time so I had to miss awhile because of the surgery and recovery from that. I started looking for another job and found out about a nursing home that offered a CNA class for free to accepted applicants and then gave them a job. Over a 100 people applied, only 12 were chosen and I was one of the 12! I had to quit my job at the store to go to the classes because they wouldn't work with my schedule- which is fine they were about to let me go anyway. I'm telling you it was awful, I still have some psychological and emotional scarring from that- and I refuse to step foot in that store. So I was unemployed for a little while during the CNA class, but eventually started working there- it was great at first. But then some things changed with management- and that really sucked. Turnover was really high all over and it was tough- I loved the old people though. A resident moved in who had been deaf her whole life and I started learning sign language- found out about the interpreting program and started school full-time in the evenings while working full-time during the day. I worked at the nursing home for just over 2 years I think, but then an opportunity for an interpreting job came up and I quit my job at the nursing home on the spot- finished out my shift and started my interpreting job the next day. I have NEVER been so happy at a job!!!! Very nearly everyone who works at the school where I work is wonderful! They are all very nice, mature and professional- things most of my other jobs lacked. I love what I am doing and I adore the little girl that I interpret for. It's been great! Since there is no school in the summer (i.e no paycheck) I also work part time for Rainbows United Inc., working in peoples homes doing respite care for special needs kids so the parents can have a break. It's pretty awesome, I've met a lot of great families and wonderful kids. :)
