Heber E's Story
Life is good
Graduated with 1st class at West Craven High School in 1972.
Attended University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill directly after high School. Others attending Chapel Hill from the West Craven class of 1972 were Betty Pugh, Sharon Hooks, Faye Mitchell, and Jennifer Jones.
Joined the U. S. Navy in 1975. Most of the next three were spent aboard ship and in-post around the Mediterranean Sea (Spain, Italy, France, England, Greece and Turkey). My duty station was the USS Josephus Daniels CG-27 a Guided Missile Cruiser Home Ported in Norfolk, Va. During these days Norfolk was just another foreign post call.
I transfered ashore in Nov 1978 to the Construction Battalion Unit (CBU) 402 at Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida. In Pensacola I met and married my wife of 36 years Debra A Reynolds.
In 1981, it was back to my last sea duty and 2 Ships out of Norfolk, VA; the USS Emory S Land AS-39 and the USS Mississippi CGN-40. Not a lot of travel this time, Just an occasional trip to place like: Nassau, Bahamas/ Nova Scotia, Canada/ Fort Lauderdale, FL/ GITMO(Guantanamo Bay, Cuba)/ Libson,Portugal/ Haifa, Israel/ Portsmouth, England, Brest France...etc.
1985 Transfered to NROTC Unit at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, MS (70 miles south of Memphis, TN). Even at the university the Marine Corps Gunny and I traveled with the Drill Team to places like:
New Orleans during Mardi Gras, St. Louis, MO; Champaign, IL; Auburn, AL; and Chapel Hill, NC. The University considers all Navy personnel their staff with their benefits, such as taking 6 credits per semester at no cost.
July 1988 Transfered to Commander, US Naval Forces, Japan (CNJF) ORS DET in Yokosaka, 35 miles south of Tokyo and 45 miles from the Yokota Air Force Base. My whole family lived with me in Japan and daughter was born (1990) at the Navy Hospital in Yokosuka. She has to get copies of birth certificates from the U S Department of State. ceanography Research Detachment was Shore Duty that counted as Sea Duty. The electricity in Japan is 100 volts, 50 hz cycles (US 120/60), which means an american electric clock will only get 50" per hour instead of 60". Micro waves will work but at reduced power. Most TV and VCR clocks work fine because the AC power is converted to DC power inside the unit. In Japan their is no traffic court, if you get a ticket, you are guilty and must pay. I lived off base in the Japanese Community for a year before I got an apartment on Base. The Japanese are superstitious about the number 10 like we are13 and sometime skip it when building skyscrapers.
1991... Transfered for my last tour to the NROTC Unit Georgia Tech. It was later changed to NROTC Unit Atlanta Region when combined with the Unit at Morehouse and the schools at Atlanta University Center. We endured the Freak-nik traffic congestion but, went the other way to miss most of it. We lived in Marietta, GA less than 20 miles north.
1995... Retired from US Navy with 20 years and stayed in Marietta Ga where my three Kids wanted to finish High School. My first Job was Contract Security guard at the GM Plant in Doraville Ga.
I have worked for the U S Postal Service since 1997, first, at the North Metro Mail Processing Center. I carried Mail for the Smyrna, GA Post Office from 2006-2013. Just retired from being a City Letter Carrier and a member the National Association of Letter Carriers on 01 July 2013.
2014, returned as a High School Soccer Referee with Georgia Soccer Officials Association (GSOA). Worked with them before from1994 to 2006.
2015 Oct attended the West Craven class of 1972, 43rd reunion held at The Flame in New Bern, NC. Friday night before
the reunion we attended the football game between West Craven Eagles and the Havelock Rams. This went really well. Their were so many people at the game, it looked like a State Fair or something. Bravo to the Reunion Committee.
