Heidi's Story

Life Hi Kids, So much has happened since high school--some bad, some good, but happy to be alive! I got married in 1989 and started a family the next year. We spent some time in Cleveland and moved to a very small town in SE Ohio after my husband's parents retired and moved here in 1998, as it was my husband's father's childhood home he wanted to come back to. We bought a home here, and although it is out in the country (and I mean OUT IN THE COUNTRY) --everything is 30 minutes from us---it is nice to have the small town experience. Our children attend school here in Beallsville (176 miles SE from C-town, I-77 South to I-70 East, off at 800 South hang a right and follow for 22 miles, hang a left at the flashing yellow light and drive 7 more miles down SR 145 and you'll come into town, the high school on your right side--our address is 52718 ohio avenue!) in a K-12 school. We have a bank, post office, gas station, Convenient Food Mart, hardware store, 5 churches, consignment shops, hairdressers, craft and candle store, funeral parlor and TWO carwashes!! The only thing that is missing is the diversity of the city. I miss the different people and cultures and have had to educate folks down here on what life in the city is like! Most don't have a favorable opinion about "city folk" and there is some ignorance about some things, but luckily I was raised in a great big melting pot and consider myself very fortunate to have been able to make the acquaintance of people of color and a rich, vibrant, amazing culture! The city and all my people are never far from my mind. When I do come up, I feel like I am home the closer I get to Fleet Avenue. Then up pops Jacobs Field and I am truly home. My husband works as a deputy at our local sheriff's office, I am a nurse, an LPN. I am thinking very hard about continuing my education ...Expand for more
and am looking into night and weekend courses at our local tech college for my RN degree. I currently work as a nurse for ResCare, the nation's leading provider of services to the mentally retarded and two doctor's offices We have three daughters, Shannon, Cady, and Carolalice. They are 16, 14, and 10---which is really hard to believe! They are in 11th, 9th, and 5th grades this year. Since high school, I have had to deal with a couple of really sad times....my mother passed away from breast cancer in 1996 and many of you knew my very best friend and cousin, Monica Carroll, who also passed away in 1999 at the age of 29. She left behind two small children, Jason and Kelly, who were only 6 and 8 at the time of her death. Please support the Epilepsy Foundation and help us find a cure or better medicines....rally your Congressman or Senators for affordable insurance for families without it....she ran out of medicine and couldn't afford to buy it.....hadn't taken it for several weeks. She thought she was safe, hadn't had any seizures in a long time. I miss them both terribly and think about them daily. On an incredibly nicer journey, I located and developed a relationship with my father, who has been in Germany all these years. I found him 6 months after Mom passed and I hadn't seen him since 1974. My brother Hans and I have a sister, Christiane. She was 13 when we met for the first time! We have been to Germany every year since we found Dad and the rest of our family, courtesy of my father. We talk weekly and IM my sister quite often. She is also now married and they have a daughter, Thalia, who is 15 months old as of this writing (October, 2006). I hope to see some of you at the next reunion. I was unable to make it up there for 2006. I am looking for ward to the next one. Love you all, RAILROADERS!!!!
