Henry's Story

Hi, classmates! In a condensed manner, I will tell you my story. I attended Burbank Elementary School in 1957 to 1958, where my classmates were Cathy Casias, twin sisters Laura and Marsha Vigil (all were 1967 SDHS graduates); and I think I remember John Castillo from the same year. I eventually attended Lowell Elementary School from 1959 to 1961, where I met my future SDHS classmates, such as Sammy Vasquez, Jackson Silva, Larry Lupian, Doris Costales, David Rios, Miguel Estrada, Mary Ann Hernandez, Nick Johns, Johnny Arraujo, John Cananaigo, and other friends. I moved on to Memorial Junior High from 1961 to 1964 where I met friends such as Roberto Saucedo, Roberto Gutierrez, and Fred Isabella. And I know most of us who had the Arts class remember Mr. Martinez ("Class, oh, class, be quiet:). From the fall of 1964 to 1967, I attended San Diego High School (the Castle), where I met such good friends as George Guevara, Tony Costa, Artie Ochoa, and other classmates. And I know you remember Mr. Volk, if you took algebra ( the "music of the spheres", and the 5th dimension. Once he did ask me if I had ever heard the "music of the spheres". Of course, I said no, although I have heard other subjective things in my lifetime. After graduating from SDHS, I attended San Diego City College, San Diego State University (graduated in 1975 with a B.A, in Sociology), and Alliant International School of Professional Psychology where I graduated in 1978 with an M.A. in Clinical Psychology. After my graduate degree, I worked as a Medical Social Worker until 1983 when I began work as a psychotherapist in San Ysidro, CA. In 1985, I became a licensed Marriage, Family, and Child Therapist. And I've been involved in this field ever since in various capacities of responsibility. It's been a highly rewarding and emotionally charged career. On the personal level, I married Nellie Burciaga at the young age of 22, and we've been together ever since...not boring but adventurous and challenging, Like a rollercoaster instead of a straight line. In other words, it's been fun and unpredictable. And I've liked it this way. You can say we are soulmates, and the best of friends. We had to children (now 44 and 41 years old), and have seven (7) grandchildren. The eldest being 19 years old. and the youngest is 7+ years old. As for my present, and close to 70 years, I do not take my existence for granted, as one never knows ...Expand for more
when we'll be checking out. I've learned to experience the special moments we create for ourselves...those fleeting moments in time that never come back and may never be repeated. No one told me about the back aches and general pains of old age: the wrinkles, poor hearing, memory lapses, among other things. But I guess, we cannot stop the steady march of time-space. As we know, when the universe developed, the arrow of time pointed forward. But as a gift, the energy we have inside our physical bodies (soul, spirit, electro-magnetic energy, etc.), never gets old. It's as youthful now as it was when we were 10 years old. As for my personal interests, I love to travel (whenever I have the funds), to distant locations, different cultures, and picturesque beauty. When I was in my 30s, 40s,and 50s, I neglected to take time off for ourselves; although I had a constant urge to do so. Thus, for the past 5-6 years, I've been making up for lost time. It's be an exhilarating experience from Rome and Naples, Italy, to half around the world to French Polynesia in the South Pacific (Bora Bora, Moorea, Tahiti); and from the Caribbean (Jamaica, Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Cozumel) to the beauty of Yosemite and Utah's majestic national parks. I also enjoy photography such a nature's panoramic views, to portraits, fashion, and glamour. I like to read about astrophysics and astronomy and the wonders of our universe, anthropology, paleontology, oceanography, geology, and about world history. I like historical and dramatic movies such as Schindler's List, The Shawshank Redemption, Million Dollar Baby, Mystic River, The Pianist, Gladiator, Seven, The Pursuit of Happiness, Eastern Promises, The Green Mile, The Dallas Buyer's Club, The Last Samurai, Dances With Wolves, Open Range, Lion, and Australia. I also love outstanding action movies such as The Accountant, The Revenant, The Town, Jason Bourne Trilogy, Edge of Tomorrow, Taken, Kiss of the Dragon, and The 13th Warrior. And as for comedies, my favorites are When Harry Met Sally, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Groundhog Day, and Bad Santa (the original one). My present continuous to be filled with dreams and realistic goals, but I need to maintain my focus on the business of healthy living to make these come to fruition. For the gift of life, health, family, lasting friendship, and honor to my Higher Power for his tender mercies. Henry Burciaga, M.A., LMFT
