Henry's Story
School
BTA was a wonderful time. Pretty good education (Zuck, Dave Weinstein's Geometry, Mr. Merlis's American History classes with redcoats going down Bedford Avenue, Mr. Brand's English courses and speed-reading class in his home basement, Biology which we HAD to learn before the final), great fun times in silly classes (Ollie, Shmid not allowing David Kaufman & Stewie Stern & Irwin Schildkraut to take finals because of long hair and I refused to take the exams too as a "secondary boycott", Dootch, Herbie, the Rock), basketball, and good friends.
Jody Yarmush and I organized a successful 25th reunion in 1998, and this year's 30th will be on June 8th (right after Shavuos) at Joe Sprung's home in Westhampton.
Hope to see all of you there.
College
Spent a lot of time with Dave Wasserstrum and others majoring in Accounting. We hung out at Kosher King in Whitehead Hall's basement.
Was busy earning pocket money as Business Manager of the "Kingsman" and running my Tutoring Referral Service.
Graduated a term early in January 1977 by taking a whole term during the summer of 1975 - - - 2 computer classes, an introduction to Psychology and Romantic Poetry!
Workplace
A VERY long story. I haven't been anywhere for 4 years since high school at BTA.
Coopers & Lybrand (1977 -78) out of Brooklyn College where I got my CPA. Harvard MBA next (1978-80).
Empire Steel Trading Company (1980-82), a Harvard classmate's family business. IGI Biotechnology in Columbia, Md (1982-84) as VP Finance. A management con...Expand for more
sultant with Touche Ross (1984-87) at their Financial Services Center on the 93rd floor of 1 World Trade Center. One of my projects was an investigation of E.F.Hutton.
Equity research analyst at Sanford C. Bernstein (1987-88) where I covered Enron and met Ken Lay. Bankers Trust (1988-1991) where I was first an internal management consultant and then Controller of a $75MM business unit.
In 1991 I joined Pharmos Corp, a biotechnology company majority-owned by David Blech, as CFO. I helped take them public --- when they closed their NYC office, I was asked if I wanted to move to lovely Alachua, FLA, 15 minutes outside Gainesville. I declined. I joined another high-tech start-up, FastCast Corp, on Long Island as CFO. After JP Morgan and First Boston invested $20MM, they shut the LI office and asked if I wanted to relocate to Louisville, KY. Again, I declined. I sold tax arbitrage strategies to large corporations and wealthy "family offices" for Twenty-First Securities (an investment boutique) and then set up my own consulting firm.
On January 1, 2002, I joined Tom Suozzi's turnaround administration in Nassau County as Treasurer. We have $3 Billion in debt (which my office keeps track of on manual ledger sheets) which is rated right above "junk" status.
We just received bond rating increases from all 3 rating agencies, an independent affirmation of our success in getting on the road to straightening out this mess.
It's been fun, but I'm ready to leave Government and return to the "real" world of private industry.
