Henry's Story

In 1966 I transferred to Mount Hebron, which was at the time a junior high school. I was in 7th grade at the time and transferred to Mount Hebron in January (mid-school year). It became clear that the plan for Mount Hebron was to turn it into a high school. So in total I attended for almost six years. Some of the highlights of high school for me were writing for the literary magazine and school newspaper, acting in school plays, participating in student government and all the friends and acquantainces who I hung out with, chatted with or confided in: Susan Anderson, Shelly and Vicky, Paula and Debbie, Allen and Fred, Sally Fox, Jill Remmel, Roland Titsworth and many more. By the time of graduation the world had changed and my hair got longer! I decided to go to UMBC and live at home while going. UMBC was the college grind but my experiences there opened my mind and intellect to possibilities of an interesting adult life and career. I had some interesting part-time jobs like driving a special-equipped school bus for children with cerebal palsy and working at the UM Law School library. I majored in Sociology because I enjoyed the content and wasn't sure what else to major in that I really liked. I did enjoy the film, music and history classes as well. I really buckled down to my studies and starting getting very good grades. I didn't have much time for socializing. I do remember hanging out on campus with Judy Stansbury. She was great fun and good to talk to about life in general. I decided to go to graduate school and applied to University of Michigan and Indiana University for the graduate program in sociology. was accepted by both, but decided on Indiana because they offered a graduate assistantship with all tuition paid. I really enjoyed being in Bloomington, a great college town, with so many students from all over the world. I lived in the graduate student dorm, which was really my first time to live away from home for an extended period. After my first two semesters in the Phd program in sociology, I realized that I wanted something more practical so I could have a good career with good compensation. So, I applied for the MBA program and was accepted. I finished the two year program in December 1978. I took all the core business courses and majored in personnel and organizational behavior (Human Resources). Before I knew it I was offered a position by Amoco Oil, headquartered in Chicago. I spent 20 years with Amoco. I was in Chicago, Houston, Buenos Aires, and back to Chicago. I traveled over much of the world on business trips and actually lived in Argentina for almost 5 years. It was demanding work but totally worth it on many levels. When BP bought Amoco in 1998 I decided to leave. I worked about 5 more years in Human Resources (in total 25 years)for two other companies. The last one was located in Florida. In August 2004, I decided to "retire" from my career in HR. It was a good one, but I found myself not enjoying it in the last few years. It had also become very stressful and negative work for me. Since then, I've worked only part-time investing in real estate and the stock market and enjoying life in Florida. I also lived in London for 6 months. Now, recently single again, I live with my dog, Maggie.
