HENRY's Story

NEW BRUNSWICK, BLOOMFIELD, TOTOWA, LIVINGSTON. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is DAVE SNYDER, because HE WAS SO LOYAL to my father. He worked 12-1 and 5-6 from the early 50s to 1980 at Hank's Amoco in North Wildwood. TWO PITUITARY TUMORS FROM CUSHINGS DISEASE I WAS 6'1" IN HIGH SCHOOL AND DROPPED TO 5'4" during the summer of 2002. Severe osteoporosis from the Cushings Disease caused 9 vertebral compression fractures. That led to the 9 inch drop in my height. I HAD 8 SPINAL SURGERIES from 2009 TO 2014 TO CORRECT THE SEVERE KYPHOSCOLIOSIS CAUSED BY CUSHINGS DISEASE! The 1st ACTH secreting pituitary adenoma (benign tumor) was removed via transphenoidal (transnasal) microscopic neurosurgery on Oct 1, 2002. A 2nd tumor was discovered in July 2010. The same neurosurgeon attempted to remove it in Feb 2011 but he was unsuccessful. Normally these microadenomas sporadically form inside the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland just like my first one did. My second one was located outside the anterior lobe near the posterior lobe. My neurosurgeon did not remove the tumor because it was hidden and he could not see it with the microscopic tool. Unfortunately for me he went ahead and removed my entire anterior pituitary lobe which shut off many vital endocrine functions. I was NOT cured. I needed to have both adrenal glands removed to "cure" the Cushings Disease but that 6mm tumor is still up there and is active to this date. It's not causing me any harm but has to be monitored via a yearly pituitary MRI which I get at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. I go there because there is a very slim possibility that this benign adenoma could enlarge and turn cancerous. I have titanium rods, cages and pedicle screws starting at T4 and going all the way down to the sacrum. My 8th and final major spine surgery was d...Expand for more
one at NYU Langone's Hospital for Joint Diseases on July 30, 2014. I've been fortunate because no titanium rods have fractured since then. Between 2009 and 2013 rods fractured 4 different times leading to 4 additional surgeries. Other than that I'm feeling fine now. I took my first flight and real vacation in 18 years in Aug 2018 when Carol and I took a trip to Ireland for 17 days during which I walked over 50 miles. I wasn't able to walk too far until 2018. It took all those years between my last surgery in 2014 and 2018 to recover and walk again. Update Aug 2, 2020. In 2019 I suffered some serious setbacks re my spine. In March and May a long screw in my sacrum somehow got pushed against a spinal nerve root causing immense pain and numbness in both my feet and legs for about 2 days each time. A CT-Scan Myelogram was done in June at NYU Langone's Hospital For Joint Diseases in NYC. It was clear that the screw had to be removed. I was in no hurry to have a 9th surgery on my back so I waited awhile and got a 2nd opinion this past Feb. Before I had a chance to meet with my surgeon at NYU the pandemic started. I met with him this past week and we're getting close to picking a date for the surgery. Update: Feb 26, 2021 I met with my spinal surgeon in late Aug 2020 to discuss having that troublesome sacral screw removed. He changed his mind and recommended against performing surgery #nine on me to remove that long screw. Removing it he said wouldn't lower my base level of pain because that nerve root suffered permanent damage in 2009 when that too long a screw was first put in. To access the screw he'd have to cut several titanium rods and move muscles and tendons out of the way then rebuild that entire area. The screw stays and I won't have to suffer the agonizing surgical pain that could last for months and go thru PT rehab yet again.
