Henry's Story
Since Rio Mesa: BA at Cal Poly, 4 years traveling Africa, MA at Yale, sailed around world on cargo ship, 3 month trip to Asia, entered Yale Ph.D. program in African History, got married to lovely bride in Cape Town, blessed with a daughter, currently living in South Africa.
Longer version: After graduating from Rio Mesa in 1991, I went to Cal Poly, SLO and got a BA in English. San Luis Obispo was a brilliant place to study. In the middle of my BA, I went on a one-year student exchange to the University of Zimbabwe and had such a great time that I decided to stay a bit longer and travel around awhile. One year became two became three became four years! Only after 17 countries and thousands of backpacked miles did I finally come home. Marjorie Bingham who I married (after a long long courtship) in 2005. We now have a lovely daughter and continue to live in Cape Town.
In 1999, I went to Yale to do an MA in African Studies. I am currently enrolled in Yale's History PhD program, conducting dissertation research in Cape Town, South Africa. I am writing my dissertation on "port culture," especially about the lives of sailors, dockworkers, and prostitutes. It is fascinating work! I was even able to sail from Los Angeles to Cape Town (via Asia, Suez Canal, Europe and West Africa), stopping at 14 ports along the way.
