Herbert's Story

NBHS was an excellent time and place for me! Friends, structure, a variety of extra-curricular activities, many very good and dedicated teachers and administrators, a feeling of safety, and ... learning, even! Plus New Bedford provided me my caring family, good neighbors, the JCC, YMCA, and Junior Achievement. I did sales, collections, and installations for my Dad's Superior Sales Company on Saturdays. Working summers -- and my just loving being a counselor, bus counselor, and Unit Head at the Y's Camp Massasoit in Mattapoisett for 5 summers -- that was my calling and eventual career path. After NBHS, it was off to UMass/Amherst: Hills South dorm life; Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity; Resident Assistant; and BBA in General Business and Finance. Belatedly found my direction career-wise -- community and social services! Waltham Boys' Club, BU School of Social Work for my MSW degree, JCCS of New England, School Social Worker for the Meriden Public Schools, and my founding our mental health and educational private practice, Adolescent & Family Counseling Center, LLC. This is where Linda and I are still working full-time, "Helping You Solve Life's Problems". Linda and I met in 1970, when she was Waterfront Director at the Grossman Day Camp and I was Junior Village Director. We were married in 1971; my love and girlfriend and I have been partnering together ever since. Raising and loving our sons, Matt and Ric, counseling clients in adjacent offices in our practice's suite just 2 miles from home, and kayaking in the streams, ponds, lakes, and salt waters of the east coast. We occasionally will nudge the other and say aloud , "Thank you for liking the things that I like!" And, now, being 'loving in-laws' ... and our 'grand-parenting' Zofia and Elias has been wonderfully additions to our list of "...the things that I like!" Ric and James live in Saratoga Springs, NY, about 3 1/4 hours away, and Matt and Lani have moved from DC to southern NH, only 2 1/2 hours away. So we see our 4 sons and daughters and our grandkids more often and we love it! At age 35, as a school social worker, I become aware that I have a 'Learning Disability in Sequencing" and at age 50 that I have "Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder". This new reality has been interesting and helpful, both in my personal and professional lives. ADHD medication has i...Expand for more
ncreased my focus, reduced anxiety during transitions, and made me less irritable or impatient when stressed. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, I have used and shared these diagnoses to better assist our clients and to empathize ever better with their medical or emotional issues I am assisting clients to overcome. We have no plans for retiring. We still love what we do ... and it is working. What I would like to do is to cut back from full-time and let our excellent professional staff carry the practice ahead more. I want to spend time weekly on: writing my book, There Is Hope!; for Adult Survivors of Child Sexual Abuse (c) providing successful therapy for adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse; and pursuing other channels of creativity through "Rosenfield Innovation, LLC", including inventions, social organizations, and a song or two. The NBHS Class of '63 was a very special class. Leadership, athletic success, academic excellence, spirit, fun, and mutual concern. Not just 'then', but ongoingly. I don't remember hearing about another a high school class that had a class reunion every 5 years for 50 years! And I have happily attended every one of them, because it still is a good place to be and I am very proud to be an active member of the outstanding NBHS Class of '63! I guess I am STILL 'living my high school years', following through from activities I had done in the 1960s ... * Student --> researching and writing a book; * YMCA camp counseling --> directed day camps for a decade; * Junior Achievement and Superior Sales --> founded and managing my own businesses; * Student Court --> organized Cheshire Child Protection Team; chaired Meriden Youth Advocacy Committee; * Male and Mixed Chorus --> have written a couple of songs; * Kiwanis Key Club organization --> Chamber of Commerce and Temple Brotherhood; * JCC and YMCA member --> worked for the Y, Boys' Club, and JCCs and on Temple Board; * Science Fair participant --> using creativity for inventions and innovations; * Class Steering Committee --> Skyped into NBHS Class of '63 50th Reunion Committee. How would I hope old friends would remember me? The yearbook supplement read, "We'll miss Herb's friendly smile." That would be a great remembrance. And, on my headstone -- hopefully very many years from now -- "He left the world a better place!"
