Herbert's Story

Herbert is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, and where I remember growing up was at 504 Randolph Street and in the first through the fifth grades, I attended McCallie Elementary School and walked both ways every day to the school and back which was located on Gratz Street. I have told my children it was a very long walk and uphill both ways! :o) Everyone walked in those days as WWII was in full swing and cars, gas and tires were in short supply. When my Dad died (before he was 50) in 1944, my Mother was working at Oak Ridge was provided housing in Oak Ridge enabling her to move there with five of her eight children (four boys and four girls) and I entered into the remainder of my fifth year at Pine Valley Elementary located on New York Avenue. I enjoyed the new shool and the after hours atheletic program at Pine Valley and made a lot of new friends there, and we lived at first down on Pasadena Avenue in an "F" type house and later, as the family thinned out from marriage and the oldest brother leaving for military service, we moved to a "B" Type house, located just a short distance up from the school, and it was truly uphill going home and downhill going to school. In the possible confusion about House Types, as in "F" and "B" and for information to non-residents of Oak Ridge, the "F" type was one of the largest houses at Oak Ridge and the "B" was next in sized to the smallest. When I graduated from Elementary School, I went to Jefferson Junior High School, but during my second year there, one of my older sisters asked Mom if she could take me to San Diego to live with her for a...Expand for more
year, as her husband was a sailor stationed at the Balboa Naval Hospital there, and she needed me to keep her company, so I went to San Diego and entered Memorial Junior High School there, and enjoyed the time in San Diego as they had great weather and lived outdoors a lot. When we returned from San Diego, I finished Junior High at Jefferson Junior, and then went to Oak Ridge High School for my tenth year, and at the end of that school year, we moved back to Knoxville, in the same house we had left, and I entered my 11th Grade at the old Knoxville High in it's last year of operations. While I had joined the chorus at Oak Ridge High, I opted for the R.O.T.C. training at Knoxville High and enjoyed field stripping the M-1 and cleaning it, BUT never got to fire the gun even once! In the following school year, my 12th year, I was assigned to Knoxville East High Scool located then on McCalla Avenue, and at first had to ride either the trolley cars or buses or both and that memory is fuzzy at best about which, but often Mr Browning, my Chemisty Teacher would pick me up at the corner of Magnolia and Randolph and give me a free lift to school. We had some great conversations and he told me one time the only time I ever had my chemistry book open was when it fell off the table and fell open. Oh well, as you might have guessed by now, I was not a scholar, but I really did enjoy school and all the friends I made everywhere while attending. I will save the rest of my life's story for another day, and have told a good part of it on Facebook aand you can pick it up from there, if interested.
