Herbert is originally from Knoxville, Tennessee, and where I remember growing up was at 504 Randolph Street and in the first through the fifth grades, I attended McCallie Elementary School and walked both ways every day to the school and back which was located on Gratz Street. I have told my children it was a very long walk and uphill both ways! :o) Everyone walked in those days as WWII was in full swing and cars, gas and tires were in short supply. When my Dad died (before he was 50) in 1944, my Mother was working at Oak Ridge was provided housing in Oak Ridge enabling her to move there with five of her eight children (four boys and four girls) and I entered into the remainder of my fifth year at Pine Valley Elementary located on New York Avenue. I enjoyed the new shool and the after hours atheletic program at Pine Valley and made a lot of new friends there, and we lived at first down on Pasadena Avenue in an "F" type house and later, as the family thinned out from marriage and the oldest brother leaving for military service, we moved to a "B" Type house, located just a short distance up from the school, and it was truly uphill going home and downhill going to school. In the possible confusion about House Types, as in "F" and "B" and for information to non-residents of Oak Ridge, the "F" type was one of the largest houses at Oak Ridge and the "B" was next in sized to the smallest.
