Hildreth's Story

Before college, life was a blur. In addition to school, I participateld in Track and owned my own horse. I also began a life long love affair with all forms of wheeled vehicles. College was a blast. I matured, began getting good grades and generally found myself. In 1965, upon graduation from Park College (now Park University), I immediatly started advanced studies at the University of Detroit, receiving my Masters degree in Economics two years later (1967). As all graduate classes at U of D were conducted at night, I rarely saw daylight for two years. I then began what was to become a 21 year career with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan; planning, forecasting and budgeting for a data processing division with $90 Million in expenses. During my watch, we progressed from a small tab shop to the largest non- govermental data processing installation in the World. During my stay with Blue Shield, I was drafted into the Army (1968) at the tender age of 26. As Blue Shield's formal name was Michigan Medical Service, the Army logically made me a medic and sent me to Vietnam. I was assigned to a mechanized infantry outfit (1/5 Mech) and spent 11 months getting shot at and patching up my comrades. (I must have been good, my patients and their buddies all had guns). The upside was that I had my own Armored Personnel Carrier, complete with 50 caliber Machine Gun, outfitted as an ambulance. Nothing got in my way. While in Vietnam, I was wounded three times and received numerous awards. I went to Bangkok for my R&R (I&I) and returned to the States after 11 months overseas (thank you President Nixon). I was reassigned to Ft. Eustis outside of Williamsburg, Va. (a blast) for the remainder of my Army ...Expand for more
career. While in Williamsburg, I got married to an old friend who showed up one day. That lasted 11 years and produced no children. In 1988 after 21 years at the Blues (they kept my job for me while I was in the service), I took a buyout and began searching for a new career. Local government looked promising and was only a short distance from home. After volunteering for four years, I ran for office and won, and was reelected three times. My major accomplishment was funding $30 million in infastructure improvements with only minor increases in taxes. In 2000 the voters celebrated the millennium by retiring me and I began a life of leisure. I have a beautiful house in Beverly Hills (Michigan, that is) living just six miles from where I grew up. My interests include old cars, model trains and photography. I also have traveled extensively within the US and plan to continue as long as I am able. In 2007, I took delivery of a brand new black Ford Mustang convertible. It is a dream come true. This will probably be my last new collectible car as I tend to keep them for 15 years and by that time I should be in a home. In 2008, I cut back on my travel as my 27 year companion, Barbara, was in poor health and was unable to travel anymore. In February of 2009, my best friend and companion died of emphesima and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I have successfully undergone 9 weeks of Omnibeam radiation therapy spending the summer at home. I am done now and plan on making up for lost time. It is Thanksgiving, 2009, and I have reunited with my ex wife from 30 years ago. After all that time, we have found that our differences have faded away and we can once again become friends.
