Howard's Story

Life About me: A man of wide and varied interests, I have done a variety of things in my life from being a Christian missionary in West Africa(3 years), an Air Force Chaplain(25 years), a Real Estate Broker and land developer(40 years), a public affairs trainer in France & Germany(1 1/2 years), a language instructor (French & Spanish), a tour guide leader/teacher to France and Switzerland(3 summers), a humanitarian relief truck driver to Bosnia Herzegovina, a beach bum in Crete, a self-trained lawyer whose pro se cases have won over some of the best professionals(state supreme courts, federal district and even one unsuccessful one to the US Supreme Court), general contractor/builder(apartment houses, commerical buildings as well as private residences), father of 8 and grandfather of 27 (so far), and all-around nice guy. (Of course, many of these activities were concurrent, otherwise I'd be dead and buried by now. Having been "self employed" or an "independent contractor" most of those years, I could engage in a variety of things at the same time. Some of the concurrent activities necessarily supported the others, e.g., when the real estate market went to pot in the 1980s, it became necessary to file legal actions, or defend in others, to retain m...Expand for more
y vested realty holdings, otherwise lose them -- exorbitant legal fees made it a losing propostion even if ready cash was there to hire professional -- which it normally wasn't. With access to a fine law library at BYU and the willingness to spend the necessary time there, I was able to hold my own against some of the best in the business. And I would have done even better had not many of the judges been partial to their own brethren in the "legal fraternity." In a number of instances, I had to beat them by taking my case to the appeals courts where I was, more often than not, successful. However real estate and construction have been my first loves. I love to see old properties renewed or see an empty lot have a house on it. But it was my realty investments which allowed me to support that habit since in so many instances, I had little profit to show for my endeavers in construction. It was too easy to give in to extra requests that were never paid for or trust the sub-contractors to be fair when they were intending to take advantage. But the most gratifying activities have come after retiring and volunteering for church missionary service. My ex-wife and I did 3 such missions, the first in Frankfurt, Germany, the last two in West Africa.
