Howard's Story

Pershing, Roosevelt, CHS '65 (recently learned a number of good CHS friends have gone on to take their dirt naps), 2yrs OSU, US Army, Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, Helicopter Pilot, awarded lots of medals (Distinguished Fly Cross, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal with 23 OLCs, RVN Cross of Gallantry & many more) - lost lots of friends. Was married in Sept.'68 2wks before going to Vietnam. Back to OSU on GI Bill, earned degree in Hotel & Restaurant Admin. Managed Pennington's in '74. Moved to OKC to manage a bar/disco that burned down. Passed through several jobs before becoming Food Service Director OKC Public Schools for ten yrs. State President of the OSFSA in 1983. Factory rep for 5yrs. for commercial kitchen equip. Was Food Service Coordinator at The Myriad for 10 yrs. and yes I did meet and chat with a number of celebrities. In 1995 I felt like my brain was rotting away so I earned a masters degree in Natural & Applied Science at OSU and thought being a Certified Rescue Diver would be fun. Got personally involved at the Murrah Bldg. that morning of April 19th, the slaughter there caused Vietnam flash backs 3 mos. later that really messed me up. Quit everything in 2000. Didn't do much for the next 4 yrs. Finally got restless and got a CDL, drove a big rig for JB Hunt dedicated to Pittsburgh Paint and Glass. Drove coast to coast for 2yrs., made every state except WA and ND. Even went to Canada severa...Expand for more
l times (the squirrels are black up there). Was surprised how many truckers had master degrees! Back tracking a little-- I joined the Okla. Nat'l Guard in '81, retired in 2000. Hold the all time Oklahoma safety record in the UH-1 HUEY. Flew several Governors and dignitaries (floods and tornadoes}, landed on glaciers in AK, low-leveled over the jungles of Honduras (spent a whole day at the Copan ruins), Nicaragua, El Salvador, the beaches of Belize, most of the lower 48. Awarded Honorary Master Wings from the Royal Thai Army for training their pilots on Night Vision Goggles. Bangkok is a must see. Walked across the real bridge that was in that movie. But I digress. Retired a couple of months before I hit 60 to play with my grand kids and take care of my wife. Have a son and two daughters that are all married. Eldest was born in 1970. Eight fantastic grand kids. The eldest Kate is getting a MBA at William & Mary. My wife Barbara of 53 yrs died 07/03/21 at home after a 12 year battle with Alzheimer's and I'm here to tell you that watching someone slowly but surely loose their mind really SUCKS. The "long good bye" is truly evil/insidious. No regrets that I kept her out of nursing homes. Presently enjoying the advantages of the internet in contacting school mates and surviving aviators. I attended the CHS'65 50th Reunion. Probably a stretch but I hope to make it past 80. Well I guess that's it for the time being.
